Away goal rule = BS.

Both teams get a chance to play Home & Away. Home teams shouldn't be more scared to play than Away due to this stupid rule. This is very dumb.

I completely agree, the away goal rule is completely unfair actully but what are you going to do? You can complain to it to FIFA but they wouldn't bother, they probably wouldn't give a rat's behind and just throw the e-mail or letter. They never listen to the people.

They seeded the play-offs for Europe, do you think they are going to do anything with an established rule such as the away goals?

What do you suggest then?

A 3rd game? Endless extra-times? PK's are more unfair, that's for sure.

Heh, the solution is simple: If there's a draw, extra time and if it's still even, penalty shootout

reread his post. penalty kicks are terrible; you might as well flip a coin to see who goes on. as for extra time, it's probably the best possible way to settle a draw and thus a first resort, but even it can lead to unfairness/changing the game by favoring the fresher team as opposed to the team that's played 3 games in the last 10 days and forcing managers and players to plan for two completely different fatigue scenarios which are at odds with each other - that is, they might be forced to hold back on a substitution (for a manager) or in their playing style (for players) because they won't know if they'll need the extra energy later.
In truth, there is no perfect way to settle draws. Fundamentally, you're deciding which team is better after they've proven that, at least against each other, they are equals. The away goals rule is one way of choosing that is objective and unbiased; it's no better or worse than any other objective method used, just different.

Unfair to who? Both teams know the rules, and it keeps away teams from playing defense the entire match. It's never fun to be eliminated by away goals, but it's better than watching two legs of catenaccio.

Also, I really like that a team can go from being eliminated to advancing on one goal instead of one goal to tie and then one to take the lead. It makes some matches very exciting (i.e. Chelsea - Barcelona)

Disagree. It can make teams more offensive when they play in away and also, deciding ther result in early 90 minute is better than extra-time, playing rematch, penalty shootout or coin toss (Thinking that's unfair).

The away goal rule hinders teams from playing their finest and greatest football, to play it fantastically and for us to watch some incredible play of football; that's why we watch the sport in the first place and the away goal rule hinders that, makes the players play carefully and hinders fantastic plays. Penalty Shootouts for draws, that's a price I think anyone can take in order to watch incredible football, which is what we want, don't we?

the claim to what was "unfair" used to be that the team playing the second leg at home had the advantage ... thus, playing the second leg at home was actually seen as an objective (most notably in the Champions League and other European club competitions) ... once it became a reward for superior performance, or became part of the luck of the draw, such arguments have hardly existed as genuine complaints for a change in system ...

but a different, and fairly legitimate point about the system being unfair was brought up by the New Zealand national team after their 0-0 draw away at against Bahrain: they claimed that since Bahrain were playing the second leg away, they would have a theoretical 120 minutes of time to find just 1 away goal (while keeping a cleansheet) to win the match, but the New Zealanders would only have had 90 minutes to score an away goal ... this discrepancy in the amount of time each team had, over two legs, to score an away goal was the point of contention, which it was suggested would be remedied by removing the rule that away goals count twice as much as home goals ...

I think it is a valid point, though I do also agree with those who say that away goals have spiced up so many encounters (again, especially in the Champions League and other European club competitions) in the past ...

What they should do in that case is make away goals not count as double when scored in extra-time.

Agreed, though I didn't think they had extra time when using the away goals rule, unless the away goals rule didn't settle the tie.

I disagree. Without an away goal rule, you're more likely to see teams park the bus when playing away from home, and nobody likes to watch that. I don't think it's true that home teams play too carefully now. If there's any truth to that, it's more than compensated by the fact that the away team has to open up more to seek an away goal, making it easier for the home team to score.

unfair? well, considering both teams get to play home and away it's pretty much as unfair as changing sides at half time...

like most people said here, it prevents away teams from playing defence, which enhances the excitment of the game, which is what it should all be about...

The away goal rule is not as bad as the "get a yellow card and you'll miss the final rule". Yellow cards are as easy to get and sometimes for the silliest decisions given the standard of refereeing nowadays.

Now that is stupid.

I agree. It makes players incredibly cautious during the semis. It's unnecessary.
For some strange reason, FIFA/UEFA always have strange tendencies to add a new rule to the game or modify existing ones that are perfectly fine.
