vBulletin is expensive, you cannot find a good host, though me and a friend managed to find one (gian? :p). But the host is really crappy, the forum exploded in 2 weeks. Anyway, I just think that with some skin and enhacements you can do magic with Invision Powerboard.

A friend got mine got me vBulletin for free a couple of years ago. Not sure how he did it, but it was probably aquired illegally. I used it for a couple of months perfectly to host images, but than it died.

depends what you need it for. If it is a small forum like a clan forum go for phpBB. If you want it for a forum like Soccergaming take either Vbulletin or IPB. phpBB3 is also good but not yet out.

*phpBB has many annoying problems like the backup/restore it can't restore more than 1mb and it needs one hell of a modifications to get it working.

Maybe try YaBB, they're meant to be releasing YaBB2 soon. (could be released, I've not checked for a couple of months now)
