It was the 2 part series, kind of a B movie but I like the band so I watched it. What was interesting is how people in Australia turned on them because of they were so determined to make it in the USA.

You made a post earlier in this thread that leads me to believe you are irritated by Americans and our "the world revolves around us" attitude.

:) Haha, that's right. But I think it frustrates and amazes me more than anything. I really appreciate Americans who are worldly and understand the world doesn't revolve around them - I think it's much harder to accomplish that in America than elsewhere (due to the education system, media etc all revolving around the US and only the US).

Regarding the INXS thing, yeah that was the one I meant. It was a local production here - hence it looking like a B movie. Had a few local stars - Samantha Jade, the chick who played Kylie was the winner of the X Factor here two years ago. She is hot. But damn she looks like Kylie in that show!

Australians generally have a very bad case of tall poppy syndrome. We love cutting down anyone who is too successful. Back when the Australian Cricket team dominated the world sport like no one before (they won some prestigious world sporting team of the year award ahead of Ferrari F1 back when Schumie was dominating), there were loads of fans who didn't support them because "it was boring" and "they won too much". INXS would have been a case of that. Australian's would have perceived them as arrogant, and forgetting their roots.

Actually, that almost brings me full circle, as to why Australians get annoyed by Americans. The see it as a bit arrogant that they often seem to the consider the US asthe world, and not see the bigger picture.

That's odd because Americans have always embraced Australians, I don't think I have ever heard an American say "Damn I cant stand those Aussy's".

Australia and New Zealand have a lot in common to their respective North American counterparts in the U.S. and Canada.

Aleksandr Karelin should be in the conversation. Greco-roman wrestler.

A lot of people bring him up when discussing people that could have dominated in MMA if it was popular in their time.

Sorry Tony, being the local hometown hero around here doesn't win you my vote brah.

Randomly digging through this old thread, I now see that no one has mentioned Eddy Merckx, who would definitely also deserve a shout in this regard. No one ever dominated cycling the way he did.

Did I really not mention Merckx? That's a huge oversight from me, love cycling and the cannibal dominated in so many different forms, classics, grand tours, and in a way nobody has before or since.

Yes but he was probably doped; can't think of a cyclist as a real contender for best sportsman ever.

Such a stupid comment. Don't get me started on this....

It's ignorant to assume only cyclists dope. It would be happening in EVERY professional sport in the world.

The FACTS are that cycling is the most tested sport in the world. It also had the strictest anti doping rules.

Look up Dr Fuentes - only the UCI investigated and took action. Every other sport, instead, closed their eyes and swept it under the rug

In fact, Dr Fuentes came out and said if he named all of his clients they would have to take the World Cup off Spain.

That only means I wouldn't consider any of his clients as the best sportsman ever, not that it's fine and we thus should accept cheating.

I do admit the definition of "cheating" is what's really at discussion here, I think it's what you mean.

You're still missing the point. Are you that naive that you think he was the only doctor working with sportsmen in this way??

That's as naive as thinking cyclists are the only sport doping.

There are sports where more money is at stake, are tested less, and have just as much to gain from doping. Lance Armstrong never tested positive, what are the chances a tennis player, or a footballer - who are both tested much less, and for less substances would ever be caught.

Juve doped and were never caught. I assume a shitload of teams do it, you almost have to at any high professional level

Spot on. Look at the NRL and AFL scandal at the moment.

There is so much money at stake, and such little chance of being caught if it's controlled properly.
