Building my first desktop

Make America Great Again
This is easily the advantage of building your own desktop. Beyond getting exactly what you want, beyond a reduction in price... the ability to upgrade it piecemeal and keep a top system for virtually nothing.

I have had SLI setup with both my laptops and desktops. I wouldn't recommend it. always have the single best gpu you can have. 100$ is not cheap for a gtx760.. you can have a solid 1070GTX or a Radeon 490x for something like 300-350$..

Why wouldn't you recommend? Yea probably won't match 1080 but I don't need something as good as a 1080. What are the cons of SLIing?

WHat SLI setup do you have?

WHat SLI setup do you have?

it's all over the internet. read it, more thorough information is all there.

I'll give you some info to give you an idea. SLI setup needs more power, unless you have a pretty decent power supply you're gonna brick your system.

SLI means roughly %60 on one gpu and %40 on the other. so you'll have tears, like you have when you don't use vsync all over the screen.

when you set up an SLI system, your second GPU is running at something like %70 due to some boring computer related communication stuff.. so you pay full money, and you get roughly %70 performance from your second GPU in return.

if one gtx 760 costs 100$, sell yours, add that to your budget you're gonna use for another 760 and then add some little more to get a GTX 1060 (it's not for sale yet though, you'll have to wait), which you'll get similar performance for that kind of setup but without the compromise you get from an SLI system.

If I buy new, I will probably step up to 1070 or 1080 because I do not want having to upgrade in 2 years again. Thanks for the advise, will do some more research. WHat SLI set up do you have, out of curiosity.

I wrote such a long post about this, sg told me that my time had expired, fuck them right in the pussy.
I don't recommend you doing 760 in SLI, nvidia stops supporting a card after a new series is launched to make them look faster, they are starting to do this with the 900 series. SLI depends a lot on the nvidia drivers so scaling won't be good for new games. If you can afford a 1080(700+ usd), go for it, you'll be future proofing even at 4K resolutions, if you don't mind bringing some settings down with later games. If you want to go for a budget card, I strongly strongly recommend an AMD rx 480, it only costs 200 dollars and it has impressive specs, it's stronger than a 980 and with really minimal power draw, overclocked it can reach 980 ti's, 1070's performance. If you do crossfire it will reach 1080's performance and a little more for around ~450 dollars, 300 less than a 1080.

Other thing I'd like to add is that if you can wait 6-8 months there is AMD's Vega line up which promises a lot, a lot more than nvidia's line up with their 1080ti and new Titan based on Pascal. Which will be top end graphics cards. Not sure if you're interested in these card, way too much power for a filthy casual like you.

The rx480 embargo just lifted and frankly I am very disappointed, I was hoping too much for this card, it didn't reach 980's performance, it was more around the 970 range, like 5% faster. And the overcooking is just awful, barely a 4% boost. With time and games implementing more direct x12 it will improve over the 970 but right now not the card I was waiting for. I'm sure now the 1060 will be faster but a little more expensive. So I don't strongly recommend the 480 anymore, if you plan to keep playing at 1080p is a good option

Do you play 4K games? TBH I don't think I would make out the difference between the 4K and 1080p. I would also need to ditch my very good Asus 1080p 2ms response time monitor for a 4k monitor. That is way too much expenses.

I will take your advises. I won't upgrade for now I think because most games I play still run fine. The game that started to lag is Tomb Raider the rise of. The lag is minimal and the game is very playable. If I upgrade, I will get the GTX 1070. It is 2/3 of the price and should be good for years.

I could overclock my GTX 760 for now. I tried doing these once (Can't remember if I tried overclocking CPU or GPU) and I was getting blue screens. I also have an Intel 4770k and I haven't overclocked which is a waste because I paid extra $50 to get the K.

I tried overclocking. Works but I still can't play with higher than medium graphics for The rise of the tomb raider on medium settings. Still looks good, but I will have to upgrade soon, looks like.

Silly question: What's the difference between GPUs that comes with fans and those that don't? For those that don't, do you still need to buy separate fans?

This

versus this:

Both are gtx 1080s.

You don't need to buy separate fans, it's just a different style of cooling the graphics card. The circle you see in the first one is a blower fan, it sucks the air and expels it through the back of the card, that's the reference design nvidia makes, they call it the founders edition and it's more expensive than the custom cooler from the second picture and not really worth it, custom cooler designs are better and cheaper, it's a weird market strategy from nvidia, try to avoid the founders edition cards, go for the msi, asus, gigabyte cards.

Edit: there are other custom cards with the blower design, the difference is that the blower design makes the card hotter but keeps the rest of the components like the CPU cooler because all the hot air scapes through the back of your case, the custom fans keep the card cooler but throw all the hot air back to the case, making the rest components hotter but it's a lot more quiet because the job of one fan is distributed between two or three.

I have a 1440p monitor and I'm planning to buy a second one, I don't think I'll move to 4k anytime soon. But 4k TVs are becoming quite common so that's what I said that, everyone is trying to push 4K lately

Thanks a lot.

I think I will wait a while and buy the gtx 1070 I think.

How do I know if lag in games is due to a weak GPU V/s a weak CPU? I'm pretty sure that my CPU is alright. I have an intel i7-4770K.

With that CPU you won't suffer bad performance, so I wouldn't worry with that. To test if a CPU is creating a bottlenck you need a software to record your hardware status, like shadowplay for nvidia, if CPU usage is always at 100% and your GPU usage never reaches 100% you're causing a bottleneck there. But with that i7 I don't think that's your problem.

Awesome. Is it worth waiting and see if the 1070 price will go down or is it a waste of time? Do they even go on sale? From what I have seen they don't seem to go on sale. The gtx 760 is still priced at the same price I paid in 2014.

They will get price cuts, but not anytime soon. the MSRP of the card is 380 dollars, so try to get it around that price, the 450 usd founders edition is bollocks.

The cheapest I can find right now here in Canada is 455 USD so I will wait. I overclocked the gtx 760 and at least I can play most games on high for now.

I have no interest in 4K or 1440p. Unless you have a very large monitor and sit very close to it, most people won't see the difference compared to 1080p.

Yeah, better wait for better deals, here is fucking 500 dollars, the 1080 is 800. Fucking bollocks

Here's a picture of my setup. I installed LED blue fans in the front and LED strips inside for coolness.

I also bought gaming keyboard and mouse. Corsair k70 mechanical keyboard and corsair M65 mouse.

I suggest you to wait for HBM 2 Gpus, aka 2017. Titan P's probably gonna have Hbm 2 but Titans are worthless. Next year we'll probably get Hbm2 gpus in 400 $. 1080p 240hz ftw.

Since you prefer 1080, why not give 240hz a try.

I am on a budget. I have a mortgage to pay and have other investments. I have the money but I would rather spend it smartly. I am not a very hardcore gamer. I play just Fifa and a few occasional games a year. For the past year I have played only fifa and the rise of the Tomb Raider. Last year I played just Fifa and GTA V.

Titan's are usually very expensive and right now the GTX 1070 is better than titan X and titan X is almost double the price. Titans are not worth it.

I am sure you won't make out the difference between 240 Hz monitor and 60 Hz monitor if you put side to side. It is not worth it. 4K is also pretty useless unless you sit very close to a very large screen.
