Can't play .AVI files

I've tried playing a .Avi file in both Windows Media 10 and Real Player and it crashes both of them. It doesn't give any error message. Anyone got any ideas on how to fix it?

Are you sure you have all the latest codecs? If you do then i guess the avi file is screwed. Try downloading it again or something.

You probably just need the proper codec. If you're not sure what codec you need, download this short program, [GSpot 2.21 - Stable version] from this website: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/GSpot.htm

It's simple and easy to use. Just follow the directions listed on the website.

the major avi files are either divx codes or xvid codes just download those 2 and install their codes and u will be able to watch almost anything... others less likely codes are ogg and some others unknown codes...

Hmm. Probably should have mentioned that Voltaic Borusses suggestion worked. Thanks to the others of you that posted.
