He's a Legend mate....literally.

Do you know that after his death.......Bates banned his wife Ruth and his kids from taking their usual seats in the stand.Although since he has gone, those seats have been given back to his family........Yeah Roman :rockman:

:-puke: Bates still talks about him as an "Evil man".......What a wanker

There is a lot to hate Bates for, as well as like ...

Bit of a paradox.

Two sections in the fans.

One side you've got the football communists i.e. Bates and co. They argue it is against the good of the game to pump so much money into one club and let them rule the game or at least try to.

The other side you've got the football captalists i.e. Abramovich and co. who argue that money is a big part of the gmae and it's not against the rules to have more than everyone else.

Kinda ironic Abramovich comes from a former commie state eh? ;)

While i appreciate a lot, anything positive Bates did for the Club,Harding also did his bit and then some.Harding was a nightmare for Bates, because Harding wanted to put his money into buying players, and Bates wanted to put his money into Chelsea Village and improving the stadium.Away from the boardroom,Matthew was a different person.Away from the boardroom,Bates was the same old mean and nasty arsehole.

Fantastic story, Pete. If youve got ones that quality you gotta share 'em on here

The Bates question was one that long stymied me, too. I never used to think about it, but since he has left, I guess alot of people have got to wondering about his legacy with this club. I too cannot just hate his guts because of what he did for the club, and how he tried his best to make Chelsea a stable entity financially. On top of that, before it was rennovated, the Bridge was something of a sore sight and was still pretty small (wasnt the carpark visible from the Shed End, Pete?) I realize though, that Bates was in it for money, not love, whereas Harding was the other way 'round. I remember hearing that Matthew grew up during the heyday of the 1970 FA cup winning team, when Chelsea had cooke, bonetti and ozzie in the side, so his drive for improving the product on the pitch was understandable.

However, Bates' terrible attitude after Harding's passing, his bitterness at having been ousted from the club after he nearly ran it into the ground, his coarse treatment of staff and managers like Gullit, and especially the denial of seats to Matthew's family (that was an act that was rotten to the core :nape: ), well, you have to say that it would take a real bastard to act like that. Leeds and him are a good fit.

I'll tell you whats kinda ironic: the very thing that did Bates in, the impending financial insolvency of the club, was brought about by the weight of the transfer fees and wages spent on solidifying the team and making it competitive (unless im mistaken) which was, of course, the very thing Bates fought Harding on all the while.

Im glad to hear that Roman had the decency to get them their old seats back. He is quite concious of the supporters and the important figures of the club. I remember hearing a rumor that when he took over, the first order of transfer business was to try and recind the loan deal of Franco to Cagliari in exchange for payment. When he was denied, he apparrently threatened that he would buy the club and then make the deal happen anyway (H)

Some gems from Mourinho here

http://home.skysports.com/list.asp?...d=&lid=4163&title=Jose+blasts+back+at+Beattie
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has ridiculed James Beattie's suggestion his team are not equipped for a physical battle.

Beattie claimed that, after Everton held the champions to a 1-1 draw last weekend, Chelsea can show signs of fear.

The Toffees striker, who scored his side's goal in the game, also believed the result demonstrated that The Blues are not unbeatable.

But Mourinho has hit back at the England cap's comments, insisting that his players are not afraid of any opponents.

Mourinho also had a dig at Beattie's expense, intimating that the forward is not fit to pass judgement on Chelsea.

"James Beattie should be worried because he has been at the club for one year and he has scored two goals," retorted Mourinho.

"He should be worried about that, not what Chelsea are doing. What he says is not true.

"James Beattie had one touch of the ball in 90 minutes. He scored from the penalty spot.

"It was a beautiful penalty, no chance for the keeper. It was an important shot. But other than that he didn't touch the ball.

"They say that John Terry was afraid of James Beattie? Or that Robert Huth was afraid of Duncan Ferguson? I don't think so.

"I think we're ready for everything. If they think we're little kids, afraid of the fight, they're very wrong."

I think these teams have decided to try to physically intimidate us nowadays. The level of thuggery is ugly to see.We can deal it out as well as take it,but i fear the refs are gonna punish us and let the opposition get away with it.Michael Gray took SWP out badly but the ref waved play on.Joe Cole makes an ordinary tackle but gets a yellow.

Carvalho gives away a penalty after a bad mistake by Cech........
