Compared to UEFA CL or Fifa 2007

For those of you in the UK, Europe....how does 2008 compare in terms of:
1. Gameplay, Physics, etc.
2. Graphics (Demo looked inferior to UEFA CL)
3. Audio (new chants?)

Aragorn

Reserve Team
Gameplay: Less arcade (in the sense that is not only run on the wings and center...or take Ronnie and score...A.I. much better), much more simulator and challenging. When you asume how to play in this new game, the result is enjoyable. No more rails, etc. Lot of leagues...it´s cool to play with a 2ª Division team, like Albacete, for to put and example.

Physics: Besides the "no more rails" the physics are great, may be players are a bit slower than in past versions, but if you keep in mind the word "anticipating", there´s not problem. Ball physics a bit better than past versions. Nets physics remains the same, not very real.

Graphics: Are exactly like past versions, may be some improvement on some stadiums (a big mistake no Bernabeu), but overall graphics are excellent as always. But they changed a few faces, someones are ok, others are awfull, and the editor does not help too much, due it´s the same editor than in FIFA07. May be bodies are better...i notice that game has more polygons...it´s clear when you see a replay and it´s no so smooth as you want, due the amount of polygons.

Audio: (Spanish version) For me the audio is a 10, the chants, atmosphere, etc.. are awesome and the spanish comentators rules, really passion on the comments (Cadena SER) and with some touches of humor on the player mistakes ("My mom can stop this!!!"), great passion when the ball is near the goal area and it´s bringed by some "crack", like Ronnie, Raul, Eto´o, Torres, etc...kinda "Rrrrrrrrrronaldinho!!!!!!!!!!", very expresive. Crowd reacts now more in the plays, if you are playing well, changing side to side or recovering a ball they aplausse, etc....but in the bad hand the other 50% of comments and 75% of chants are the same as in FIFA07

Dislikes: TV Camera it´s too far, you must to play a few games until your feel confortable....but it´s the only camera that allows you to see the entire game. The other cameras are too close and you win in graphics but lost in gameplay, due that you cannot see really well the rest of players.

Editor needs to be much much better, or almost, to allow to import .bmp for faces, due some faces are not really acurate while others are perfect.

Resuming, the final game it´s not the demo, it´s much better (the marketplace demo was done before the Leipzig convention....so, in Leipzig was another demo better than the previus one, and now finally the game)

Take care

I must add i am very pleased with the game in general, for me personally this is the best version of fifa i have ever played.I was very dissapointed that the pc version is not of the same standard graphically etc as the next gen,i have always loved the updates and modding available on pc.This is the first time i have gone console over pc for a Fifa game and have been greatly surprised.

Can't wait till it comes out here...even if the Bernabeu isn't in it. So far gamerankings.com have an average of 83% from major sites so it must be good. Thanks for the review Aragorn.

Apparently there was a disagreement between EA and Real Madrid over some aspect of the rights to use the Bernabeau, hence it isn't there.

On 360 FIFA obliterates UCL and FIFA07. The only concern I have is the superhuman reflexes of the AI in intercepting the ball coupled with the sheer stupidity of the AI of your team-mates who will just stop dead instead of going to the ball. It's easily the best FIFA ever on 360 though.

Andy Gray and Martin Tyler do an excellent job on the commentary, very true to their performances on Skysports.

Another niggle is that unlike the CG version, you can't choose the venue for league matches which means once again you'll be sick of the Estadio de las Artes.

I played the demo, kind of lliked it. I hear the complete game is much better since the demo was a pre Leipzig build. You can move players towards the ball. Once you pass it, the receiving player will be highlighted. Before the ball gets there move him to it. I've done it successfully countless times on the demo. Martin Tyler & Andy Gray? Are they new or are they the same duo that's been commentating on Fifa for millenia? Hope not! Estadio Des Artes again????? Oh my! I'm so tired of that one from 2007! Too bad bout the disagreement. A modern fifa game w/o Bernabeu automatically gets a 1 point reduction from me on my review. Very bad. Are the graphics better than the UEFA game? I thought the demo was graphically inferior to UEFA. Cheers!

From my impressions thread you can tell that I have been more than impressed with the game.

However, after playing it for past couple of weeks I must say that I have ran into a few things that could/should have been sorted.

1. Players do not accumulate any fatigue from one match to another. They all start fully rested in the next match, which was quite surprising to me. This is a Manager mode I'm talking about, and not accumulating fatigue is a major flaw in a game.

2. Even within a match if you end up depleting all of the energy of a player, he can still run full speed. I thought that once the player runs out of energy he won't be able to sprint at least... odd.

3. When there is a lighter injujury the player stays on the ground lying for a few seconds, which looks great. However, once he's up and running again, there are no sighs of injury. He can sprint full speed like before. Not sure why even bother doing a sub.

Also, if there is a light injury and you see a player down, and decide to play fair i.e. kick the ball out... however, CPU won't return it to you as part of fair play...

4. The other day I have experienced a major graphics glitch. All fans on a stadium disappeared and I could see the polygon construction of the stadium. It happened on 3 games in a row, and once I restarted my PS3, it all went well again. A few games before it was all well. It only happened once, and never again. I haven't had any probs with my PS3 at all, so I assume it was a software glitch.

5. Night matches look great, but a bit too dark in some areas on some stadiums. You can barely see sidelines on some stadiums for example.

6. I only had ran into rain ONCE, in 100 odd matches. You can't set it manually, it happened by itself in Manager mode.

On a more positive note. When compared to UCL and 07, in 08 I must admit that I have scored some great and very realistic goals. I have scored a few excellent volleys, diving headers, long shots and they would be impressive even in PES world.

The game captures something that is very true to football... i.e. you must create a space for your player and USE it. This is my tip for everyone. Shifting weights and executing a skill move can really put a defender off balance... It takes a while to figure out correct timing and how to create a space for a shot, but once you get hold of it, you'll realise how "precious" that space is. Even a step ahead can give you an edge in shooting.

When in a box, if you press (Y) 360 or (TRIANGLE) PS3, you do a "lay-off" for your player, which is something that was missing in the past.

Players are not "clunky" or irresponsive. The way EA has implemented their players' ratings and abilities is by increasing/decreasing the responsiveness of players.
Star players are very responsive and skill moves are easier to perform. Less skilled players are a bit clunky, take more time to change weight from one foot to the other, receive or send passes, or to execute a skill move. Fair enough.

Another good point is that you don't feel cheated by AI when you concede a ball.

Computer makes good calls when making subs. If CPU is down even 1 goal after the first half, there is usually at least one sub in second half, and another one early in second half if the first didn't yield results. In UCL and 07 I remember that CPU used to make some subs (usually closer to the end of the match) just for sake of it, even when up few goals.

Achievements are recored in a sticker album... good idea.

In my Manager mode the CPU doesn't seem to take into account how fit/energy a player is when picking the team, it always just seems to default to using the first XI always no matter if a player is exhausted from playing too many games or not.

yeah i noticed that, vsing chelsea they played essien whos fitness was at about 1/10th of the bar and about 20min into the game he was dead..lik no energy but he played until 86th min wen they took him off...
its hard to compair champions league n 07 2 08 coz ive got 08 on next gen and had others on current gen...
but one big difference i found like apart from all the gameplay stuff which is wat EA were selling the game on...im finding it exstreamly hard to pop a long shot in...on 07 i had literally had goals from anywere in the attacking half and even one or two saved alonzo style lobs from in own half were the keeper just watched it...didnt seem to move...
but on 08 u have 2 hold L2 as u shoot for the long shot and put direct on the ball as u power up or the ball will go straight at the keeper no matter how good the shot... used to get 3-4 goals from outside the a game...but now its more or less if i get one its an on the moment shot...just outside the box some go in...but ive only had one while using barca with eto'o from about half way between the centre circle and the box which sailed in top courner...

id say the pitch isnt as wide as it was on champions league..but wider then 07... id say the ball physics are more realistic... no more clearances where the ball looks like its traverling at close to the speed of light and goes out at the other end on the full for a goal kick...i was a lil upset that how little stadiums are available...was hoping for once city of manchester stadium would make it into the game... but hey, the generic stadium has a lil in common with the stadium... there seems to be more of an edge for the home teams this year...on same difficulty i vsed man utd at home and gave them a 5-1 helping but at there home i needed a 93rd min pearla from elano to win 1-0... all in all i would have to agree with most when they say this is by far the best fifa game... i cant say soccer game coz 2 b honest...never played any of the PES games
