I like Brooks a lot, but he's not really what I would call a modern defender. He's quick and imposing and can score from headers, but he's not the best passer in the world. So he'll never be world class, but he could have been if he was born 15 years earlier. He's still not as good as Fabian Johnson or Christian Pulisic.

I like defenders like that, wish there were more of them. I don't think it is healthy for any back line to be both /all three 'ball playing defenders'. That's what Kompany brought to City this season in the few games he played, everyone just seemed so much more relaxed knowing there was someone back there who knew when to just twat it into the back of the stands.

You're right, it appears I jumped the gun a little bit, one newspaper is reporting it as confirmed but they're the only ones. Amazingly some others think there may be last minute bids to BEAT that offer.

I've seen Southampton play a lot and whilst he's a good player never once have I felt like I'm watching one of the best defenders in the world. Fonte (admittedly very old) looked equally good but has been awful since he left for West ham.

I agree. I mean, surely you can find equal quality defenders or better for that price. That seems like a Bonucci price. Why not just go for Davinson Sanchez or Andreas Christensen or even that Koulibaly guy at Napoli.
