Controller: only four main buttons recognised?

Having just bought the game I tried to set the controller up to continue with the same settings as in Fifa 10. I am using a cordless Wingman game pad, one of the few there still are with 6 main buttons - A/B/C/X/Y/Z plus the others as on other game pads. In the game's settings I seem to only be able to swap buttons rather than pressing the button I want and have the game recognise it.
Has anyone found a way around this - i.e. a way to use the C and Z buttons?
