Copa Sudamericana, FINAL, 2nd leg: Arsenal FC vs. CF América [P+R].

El Diablo Rojo

Starting XI
VS.

Stadium: Juan D. Perón.
Capacity: 55,000.
Location: Avellaneda, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Referee: Óscar Ruiz(COL).
1st assistant: Abraham González(COL).
2nd assistant: Eduardo Díaz(COL).
4th official: José Buitrago(COL).

Kick-off: 9:30pm ART(GMT -3).

Probable line-ups:

Arsenal FC
1- Mario Cuenca
14- Javier Gandolfi(c)
21- Jossimar Mosquera
16- Anibal Matellán
18- Cristián Diaz
25- Diego Villar
5- Andrés San Martín
8- Israel Damonte
24- Javier Yacuzzi
15- Alenjandro Gómez
7- José Luis Calderón

CF América
1- Guillermo Ochoa
3- José Castro
4- Óscar Rojas
5- Duilio Davino(c)
16- Ricardo Rojas
20- Alejandro Argüello
23- Juan Carlos Silva
18- Germán Villa
8- Federico Insúa
17- Rodrigo López
9- Salvador Cabañas

So it was 3-2 for the argentine side in the 1st leg, a 3-2 for América is the only score that would bring penalties, for América to win they need to have a difference of 2 or more goals if they score more than 4 then they'd need a difference of 1(i.e: a 4-3 for the americanistas makes América the champion a 2-1 would crown Arsenal).

The stadium more likely will be half-empty since in the best scenario it's expected that only 15,000 supporters of Arsenal will show up(not like they may have many more supporters or anything) however it'll mostly depend on the neutral supporters that may attend to the match, the number of América's supporter is unknown. So it's highly unlikely that the stadium will be full.

I predict Arsenal to win 1-0 and Calderón to score the goal.;)

Over 30,000 people attended with 8,000 I believe that were outside trying to get tickets:eek:

Great win for Arsenal :D

Yeah the announcers said those were the numbers of attendance, not bad for an Arsenal home match, even though it wasn't at their stadium.

Full time América won 2-1, Arsenal takes it 4-4 on away goals.

Arsenal is the 11th argentine club to win an international title.
Congrats to América too this final won't be forgotten anytime soon, both sides gave a very good show.

It really did happen, Arsenal came out victorious in this Sudamericana. My beloved Aguilas didn't have the heart nor the testicles to defend the 2-0 lead so I guess all that is left to do is to b!tch about what went wrong...so here I go.

Let us not forget Julio Grondona founded this team and that he sits on the CONMEBOL's high char so even before the games were played I could only pray that the refereeing was balanced and didn't hurt us. In the away game it wasn't obvious but shameful that Grance would stab us a couple times; as an example: the red card challege Matellan makes on Cabanas and Grance pretends like he didn't see the foul. Once again Matellan back to his old tricks cowardly punches Davino (after Davino initiated the contact) on the back of the head and nothing was done. Meanwhile in yesterday's game, Ruiz (who mysteriously has taken part in 5 America eliminations from Libertadores/Sudamericanas) doesn't call a penalty on Cabanas in the early minutes of the game. I honestly could write a couple pages on refing mistakes that took part in these 2 games, *gigles* and I haven't even mentioned that Grance called an offsides on an inbouds pass...seriously he should never ref another game in his life.

I think CONMEBOL wants Mexican teams to keep participating because it's great business for them, but they preffer we don't win them because after all we ARE invitees (lame). I'm not here to dig up old graves but it's more than evident that in the '05 final Pumas also got robbed by Carlos Amarilla vs. Boca. This has to stop we (Mexican clubs) can't have our dignity stompped on once more. It's time we get the 2nd leg played in our house along with better refs instead of these mediocre clowns who favor the Argie clubs.

Now that I'm done b!tching about Mr. CONMEBOL and his mafia, I'd like to point out that this America wasn't a Championship-caliber team, not with this crappy defense (Castro,Rojas,Davino). Some days Davino still falsely make the fans believe he's capable of great performances but when Andrizzi scores the winning goal, Davino crumbles down with that snail-like pace marking. I don't know what the team is waiting for to change our back line and get some solid center backs.

I'm extremely proud of what America did because even with 1-sided refs they were 10 minutes aways from being champions. Yes Arsenal is 50 years old but they have so much determination and desire to win by any means that they venture into being a dirty team (cancheros), of course this doesn't make them any less deserved of the Sudamericana.

What Castroman did yesterday points out how badly our teams signings have been over the last years...he's total retard. Paco-Memo Ochoa can't save us every game, I hope the people who run the team realize we need to invest in defenders and not forwards who warm up the bench. :kader:

P.S. Julio Grondona = Puuuuuutooo!!

Well if you feel the dignity of the "mexicans" is hurt by CONMEBOL the FMF is free to not take part in these tournaments, so you accept the regulations such as that you are invited, which you are, and that in the final you play home on the 1st leg, and by the way how good is that is a matter of opinion because some say it's better to be home first and others say it's better to be home in the 2nd leg, i don't know it doesn't change much for me, probably the best would be to have a single match in a neutral pitch. And you forgot that Grondona is the vice-president of FIFA too.

By the way an interesting thing about Arsenal campaign is that except against River, they won all the away matches(San Lorenzo, Goias, Chivas and América) but they could never win on the home one(a tie with San Lorenzo, Goias, Chivas, River and a loss with América).
Like i said before, Arsenal is the 11th argentine club to win an international title.
Even though Arsenal didn't have a good performance in the Apertura they managed to defeat both Boca and River by the same score, 2-1.

It's supposed to be a UEFA CUP of sorts for South America, with the difference that teams who are playing the Libertadores will also play this competition (which doesn't really make sense) as the Libertadores is a much prestigious competition. I guess certains teams are invited as a way to get a broader market in the sense of tv viewers.

Yes, however not all the countries do the same, for example Brazil sends the champion but the rest are from the 5th to the 11th position(the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and brazilian cup winner go to the Libertadores only the champion takes part in both), so yeah not all the countries do this some in reality add one or 2 more teams from the ones that go to the Libertadores. Ironically this is supposed to be the 2nd tier clubs cup yet 1st tier sides take part in it, however except maybe when Boca when the thing(and considering one was in a year they didn't play the Libertadores) the rest of the time it was won by 2nd tier teams, you could say it's screaming to be the way it should. I think this cup wouldn't exist if the Libertadores was made the way it should.

By the way Arsenal being the winning or not was going to qualify for the Intercontinental cup to be held in August of 2008 against the winner of the UEFA Cup, at least this seems to be the most reliable rumour about this supposed new cup. And for being the winner, next year, Arsenal will also play the Recopa against the winner of this year's Libertadores, Boca Juniors.

EDIT: And there could be good news.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I dont think the FMF agreed to regulations that stated...

1) The refs will be biased, for the most part, towards non-mexican clubs.

2) The away goal rule will be on a year by year basis, and for the most part we wont know if the away goal is in effect until either right before, during or right after the first leg of the final

I agree with you on the where the first leg is played part, they agreed to that so they do need to stop bitchin about it. And it is a matter of opinion.

If someone says this final wasnt biased, then youre blind

How come a "prestigious" federation like CONMEBOL hasn't decided if the away goal rule is going to count, not even moments before the match, they decided to apply it in the middle of the freaking match itself!!! when Arsenal already had 2 goals, mmm that was "strange", FIFA should forbid that kind of acts

PS the exact thing happened last year

It is said that it was written within the rules before the Sudamericana started, but that the media just assumed it was going to be like in the Libertadores. Or at least that's what it's said, i wouldn't be surprised if it was either true or false.
