crash after edit career.ini

Hey everyone

I used Filemaster to extract career.ini, edited a few minor things, and then imported it back into config.dat

I am now getting a crash when I try to run the game, "Fifa07.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created."

Few questions

i) where is this error log
ii) can i fix this? the values i edited were nothing major, didnt use any weird integers, dont see why it would cause the game to crash.

Is it crashing on start up, when you load a career, or when you play a game??

where is this error log

Try something like "CDocuments and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\drwtsn32.log" but it may depend on which run time environment the game uses (check the file dates for a clue as to whether or not it is the right log)

Depends where it is crashing. If it is on start up then I'd suspect that File Master has damaged config.dat in some way. Restore the original (or the backup that you took before changing it) and simply save the career.ini into the FIFA 07 directory under your My Documents structure and see if things work better that way. If it is crashing once you enter a career then I suggest you post a list of your changes and we'll take a look.

Hey Steve, I was hoping you'd come to the rescue!

Yeah it was crashing at startup.. didnt even get into the game at all. Im gonna try putting the career.ini file in the My Documents\FIFA 07 folder and give that a shot (I didnt know you could do that).

When I restored the original the game worked fine again, but I want to see if I can run it with these new values. Will edit this post once I try it.

edit: I put the career.ini in My Documents\FIFA 07 and the game crashed same as before.

All I did was edit a couple of fields, BID_POINT_INCREMENTS and a few of the morale settings. Some of the values were negative values, for instance changing something from -7 to -5, so always in the same type with no decimal places (except for the BID_POINT_INCREMENTS which I changed from 0.3 to 0.9) or in other places, I think ticket prices, where decimal places exited I left them in place.

edit#2: I tried something else. I exported the career.ini from the original, edited 1 field (BID_POINT_INCREMENTS), and replaced it. game crashes. I restored the original, exported it again, and edited a different field. game crashes. i edit the career.ini and restore original values, imported it back to the config.dat. game crashes. so it appears any editing at all will toast the file. I wonder what is going wrong? some time of file info/checksum thats causing the crash?

Did you try this?

1) Put the original config.dat back in the main folder

2) Also put the modified career.ini in the same folder.

Fifa should use the config.dat and also default to the career.ini for your manager career.

I have a post somewhere, either in this forum or the old FIFA 06 forum, that details the process that the game goes through to load the .INI data, but basically it reads the CONFIG.DAT, INI.BIG et al and then tries to read each individual .INI file, first from the Program Files directory (where CONFIG.DAT resides) and then, if it doesn't find the file there, from the My Documents structure. My preferred approach is to add parameters to a USER.INI under My Documents (thereby not messing up my son's environment if I leave something screwy lying around) rather than editing the individual .INI files. As long as you incorporate the relevant header records (eg. [CAREER]) then the game will pick any parameter up from there IME.

That is really odd. What are you using to edit that file and are you sure that you are saving it as a text file?? It sounds to me like you are somehow saving content to that file that the game simply cannot cope with.

That should work just fine. I've just added that parameter to my USER.INI with a value of 0.9 and the game loads just fine.

If you are still scratching your head over this then please feel free to email the career.ini file to the eaffanalyser address and I'll take a look at it and see if I can throw any light on what is going on

Hopefully my email response will have resolved your issue, which was a duff parameter value on the very last line of the .INI file
