Darren Bent - Biggest waste of money ever?

Tottenham have just signed Darren Bent for 16.5 Million Pounds
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/t/tottenham_hotspur/6252254.stm

Not sure if this is entirely thread worthy but this seems like a bizarre transfer, when you compare it to Thierry Henry who was signed by Barcelona for 16.1 Million Pounds it is a staggering waste of money. Henry is 6 years older but the difference in class is huge. Also it is not like tottenham need another striker, they already have Berbatov who is a guaranteed starter, while Keane is a quality strike partner and Defoe is a decent backup who is preferred to Bent in the England setup.
It really shows how overpriced English players have become.

:o

Bent is a decent striker, but 16,5 million pounds is way too much for him. That's close to 30 million euro's, right?

You have to laugh at spuds. 16.5 Million Pounds for a striker that has had one good season ? This guy will be the new Kevin Phillips , mark my words.

yeah english players taht are good get thier value inflated crazy style, but Tottenham did the same thing, so what goes around comes around they inflated the price for carrick and now they got to deal with an inflated price for Bent .
And just watch Defoe is gonna leave for like 15+ million now. thats messed up, I think Tottenham need a defense or midfield more than they do a striker.

So what if the prices are inflated? In 5 years every premisership club will be owned by a billionaire, they can afford it.

Help?

That's a good point.

However, this raises the question of either Defoe or even Berbatov leaving.

It would only be logical now if a striker left the spurs. Maybe Defoe? Otherwise they're idiots wasting their money on strikers when what they need is...anything but that.

If a club has the money to spend, its up to them how they spend it. The richer the club, the more the selling club will push up a players value.

Henry went for £16 million because that was probably the maximum Barca would pay for him. Henry insisted that he wanted out of Arsenal badly so Arsenal had to accept that. It was either let him go to Barca or have him sulking on the bench for yet another season.

Are Nani ( £14 million), or Anderson ( £17 million), worth the money that Man U paid for them? Probably not, but thats what Man U's were happy to pay so who cares.

Most players who come to the EPL has an over inflated transfer value. Thats because clubs all over Europe see the EPL as an easy touch. Its not just English players who are over valued, they come from all overthe World.

Not very surprising that a negative Spurs thread was started by a gooner though. Not very easy being a gooner at the moment, watching their main rivals adding to a side while their own club is in disarray. Must be very difficult.:brow:

I'm no gooner ...
apparently Liverpool are going to sign Torres for nearly twice as much as spurs paid for Bent, Torres is better than Bent but this is getting out of hand.

Torres better than Bent? In the EPL? We don't know that do we. I think Torres will need to toughen up if he wants to survive in this league. With Darren Bent at least you know what you are getting for your money. A player who can definately cut it in the Prem.

Stupid comment, and I guarantee if Chelsea had signed Anderson for 17mil you would have had him in your signature now, what kind of right do you have to say they aren't worth it? Combined they cost the same as Shevchenko. If only Chelsea had used their money more wisely.

ye torres or bent i know id rather have torres in my team but for the price comparsion id much rather have bent and he is proven in the EPL so dont see what people makeing such a big deal out of this for but it is a very high price when you already have 3 top forwards in keane berbatov and defoe

You read my post completely wrong mate. I was saying that it's nobodies business but the buying clubs to decide how much they want to pay. You gave a defensive knee jerk reaction without actually understanding what I actually said.

Bent at 16.5 million is getting critisism but Anderson at 17 million is not mentioned at all. I was pointing out that it's not just English players who have over inflated transfer values, if indeed they are over inflated. If a club can afford it and they want the player, just like Chelsea and Sheva, then what business is it of anyone else. If thats the going rate then thats the going rate. Hope you get it now.

Apology accepted.:D
