Both 69, both from cancer battles which weren't well known and most importantly both were absolute icons and so talented.

RIP gents

Wasn't a big Bowie fan (although I appreciate his contribution and talent) but man, Alan Rickman stings. He was hilarious in Dogma, Galaxy Quest and Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Die Hard and Harry Potter too, I guess.

Loved Bowie. Heroes is one of my favourite songs. I like plenty others by him too (Space Oddity, Ashes to Ashes, etc), and his style was so unique (which may be why he has plenty of people that weren't big on him - such as yourself).

Rickman was a brilliant actor - one of the best villains of all time.

He's just before my time.

Most of the songs I like by him are before my time too. I like them from hearing them elsewhere - parents playing him (not much), hearing it on TV, radio, movies etc.

I guess you could consider Labyrinth "my time", but that's not something I particularly liked him in. I preferred his classic songs more - Space Oddity was 69, Heroes 77, Ashes to Ashes 80, Under Pressure 81 etc - certainly not "my time"...

I don't think the big name classic artists have to be "your time" to be a fan.

Not saying you should like him or anything, just saying that I don't think it's really a time thing.

It may be a growing up in non-english speaking countries thing though.

True but when an artist's major songs are released 25+ years before you start listening to music the exposure is much lessened.

I have a theory which might be along the same lines as what you're saying, but it's hard to articulate. What do you mean?
