pendejo means pubic hair (according to the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language -Real Academia Española www.rae.es -)
this in mexico is an insult that actually means A**hole, d***head or whatever
in argentina, in slang, pendejo is like 'pibe' (kid) but in a ruder kind of way
'pendex' is a variation of that (popularized by an early '90s TV Show), more ina caring kind of way
you probably hear more because of american movies, in wich to represent latinamerican people, they use mexicans to generalize; it's like if i take for granted americans, australian, and british are the same, just because they speak english; or confusing a chinese or a japanese with a korean person, they'd probably kill me if i say 'they all look alike'; same with latinamerican
