Diagonals in gamepad

I have a ps2 liked gamepad. I switch the 'move player' option in the Contrl Config in Fifa06 from analogue to digital so that i can have the right analogue stick working together with the D-pad. But when i use the D-pad my players always run in right ,left, For/backward direction but not diagonals and also passes are made in straight lines. Can somebody rectify this prob for me?
