Jose Mourinho has ruled himself out of the running for the England manager's job, but has confirmed that he did hold talks with the Football Association.

The former Chelsea boss was one of the leading candidates to replace Steve McClaren, but he has opted against a move into international management at this time in his career.

Mourinho - who has been strongly linked with a summer move to Milan - revealed that he and his agent both spoke with with FA chief executive Brian Barwick and director of football development Sir Trevor Brooking.

The FA denied on Friday that they had met with any potential candidates, but according to Mourinho's statement which he released on Monday to Gestifute, (the website of his agent Jorge Mendes), they did hold extensive talks with the Portuguese coach.

"After Steve McClaren left the England football team, my representatives maintained contact with the FA.

"In that sense, I had myself useful discussions with Brian Barwick and Trevor Brooking where we exchanged ideas to evaluate the entire situation about the England squad and set the goals in case of real invitation being addressed to me.

"After deep and serious thinking, I decided to exclude myself from being England manager despite being a fantastic position for me.

"I'm sure FA will hire a great manager, one able to place the team back where it belongs.

"I reiterate my respect for the English football and, after three good years in England, I firmly believe that the England squad will soon be back to their usual great results."

With Mourinho out of the running, Italian Fabio Capello - who has admitted he wants the job - is clear favourite with the bookmakers ahead of fellow countryman Marcello Lippi.

I wasn't aware England were winning it in the first place.

Mourinho not becomming the boss isn't the end of the world, Capello is an exceptional manager, and probably more suited to the international job. But whether he takes it or not is another issue.

They say that he did more harm to the Real Madrid squad then good; the players got their own act together in the end and did it by themselves. But players taking control and doing it by themselves isnt gonna work for england.

LMAO:D Crapello is anything but an exceptional manager.

Than again England does play his style of tactic, hoof the ball up and defend. 2 players in attack and everyone else defends.

I would not say it was due just to him though, we played like ****, were behind for most of the season and only really picked it up after we were knocked out of the CL and Copa Del Rey only leaving the league title to play for. His tactics never seemed to be right and more or less towards the end the players where the ones that won it more than the coach did.

I don't think he will get results or entertaining football but that's just me.

I think Capello could do a very good job for England, his tactics may be as boring as hell, but it did Real Madrid well

I'm not sure. But winning the league with every club you managed is probably an aspect of an exceptional manager. And that includes winning it on two seperate occasions with your team.

And I'm sure any manager could take his team to the champions league final, and thrash Barcelona 4-0.

He might not have the most attractive style of management. But how anybody can say he's not an exceptional football manager is ridiculous.

Capello has the job at the moment so we'll just wait to see how it goes. I was going to make a joke about Jesus being "crucified" by the press if England lost but I decided against it. (oh wait)
