Stadium:

Estádio do Dragão

History:

September, 1893. Out from nothing, as a secret ambition unfolded by a tough and inflexible reality, F.C. Porto has been founded. António Nicolau d´Almeida, a fine sportsman and an expert Oporto Wine trader, invited, in the quality of F.C. Porto president, F.C. Lisbonense to a football match. It was the first appearance in a football match for the club, the most ancient page written in a hundred years of history.

Deep and insightful enthusiasm marked the years that followed F.C. Porto foundation. To unite the efforts of the local community with the strong English representation in Oporto was the goal of José Monteiro da Costa. This led to extinction of Grupo Recreativo «O Destino» in favour of F.C. Porto. It was the beginning of a solid structure.

The founders were men strongly determined to engender a symbol, an emblem or an icon, in which future generations would have pride on. Their remarkable initiative is still remembered. Blue and white were the colours chosen, as meaning of pureness, calmness and stillness of mind. The colours were represented, at that early time, in the Portuguese flag.

F.C. Porto evolved his purposes to national and universal goals. In the first emblem, the symbol was, of course, a football ball with the F.C.P. initials. Twenty years later the Oporto city shield becomes vital part of F.C. Porto badge. In 1948, the 3-2 victory over Arsenal, team at the time known as the best team in the world, was a proof of the blue and white potential.

Over the years F.C. Porto grew as the conquests were becoming bigger and as his purposes were becoming greater. The symbol of a region astounded the country and surprised the world. De 1980’s were probably the most memorable decade. In 1987 and 1988, F.C. Porto conquered the European Cup, the Intercontinental Cup and the European Supercup, outstanding deed, a proof of the success of special approach in how to deal with sports. Few years later, F.C. Porto achieved a goal that no other club in Portugal dare to accomplish. Five Championships in a row was a remarkable act, another great page in the club's history.

Nowadays the world has changed and Portugal too has evolved. Sports reality is now more complex, but F.C. Porto remains at the top. The club remained winning and the dynamics persist, continuing to be a flag of the region. F.C. Porto has now representation all over the country and all over the world.

The Centro de Treinos e Formação Desportiva PortoGaia and the Dragão Stadium are modern standard of a vanguard difficult to be equalised. The future shines as a reflex of the conquests of the UEFA Cup, in the season 2002/03, of the UEFA Champions League, in 2003/04, and the Intercontinental Cup, in 2004.

Beyond the reality that surrounds football, F.C. Porto showed his greatness in other sports. The honours achieved speak for it. The club that has a Dragon as a symbol holds the Championship title in basketball, handball and roller-hockey, the sports that more cheer up the portuguese. Billiards, swimming, athletics, adapted sport, motor sports, boxing, camping, chess, fishing, karate and weightlifting give also the contribution to this history of success and insure the diversity and necessary involvement in community well being.

hellz yeah niggaz (H)

new season, new hope!

Time to thank Jesualdo for his dedication for the club, of course.
6 trophies in 4 seasons is not bad at all, but I guess we did need a breath of fresh air in the locker room.

Kind of anxious to finally know who'll be our next coach, seems like Villas-Boas is in the front seat to take the job and tbh I would very much like that to happen.
he's young and ambitious, knows portuguese and european football pretty well since his years under Mourinho's guidance can only have given him that kind of experience, and apparently likes his team to play an attractive style. One can only hope he joins the beautiful to the effective in case he ends up joining us...

The other rumoured option has been Fluminense's Muricy Ramalho, who's had a solid career coaching in Brazil. Thing is I only see one pro on bringing him in: we might eventually get Hernanes who IMO is one of the best midfielders in the world atm, he's simply my top priority for next season...Muricy coached him during his (very successful) spell at São Paulo.
Thing is he probably costs around €10M and there are a sh'tload of teams chasing him so I really don't know how possible getting him would be for us...but one can dream, right :(

talking about next season's squad, I assume we are going to be moving quite a lot in the market.
Meireles and Alves will most definitely leave after the WC, we already got Sereno for the blank CB spot but we still need that extra midfielder. Like I've said before Hernanes will be ideal but I would also give Castro a shot in the first team. And considering that Tommy and Valeri could be loaned or sold, we definitely need to fill that midfield up with good options...
in the attack we need a couple of strikers and a new winger, then we'll be ok.
Farías is bound to leave and Orlando Sá will most likely be loaned out so we desperatly need to find Falcao some top competition.
On the wings we have Varela, CR10, Mariano and Ukra but we still need more depth...

that's my take on things for now, hopefully we'll make good decisions during this pre-season in order to come back stronger than ever...

Mourinho v2.0 I hope :(

It's gonna be tough for sure, assuming Benfica will not sell anyone else besides Di Maria and Braga keep their main players and get a few quality others...
but we are Porto fans and as you know for us failling to win the League for one season is enough for it to be considered a ******* disgrace, so I'm confident we'll be taking the right path towards making a serious comeback.

man, why the **** is it taking so long for Villas-Boas to be officially announced? :nape:
I know he has a release clause of €0,5M and we are probably trying to decrease the cost by including a couple of players in the deal but still...I'm just anxious to see the coach issue settled for good!

a few players have been linked with us as usual but there are no solid rumours as of yet. I guess we'll only define what to do in the market after the new coach is in, which makes absolute sense but still...I hate all the waiting :(

The sooner I whined about it, the sooner André Villas-Boas was officialized (H)

2011/2012.

O Conselho de Administração

Finally! Now let's see see what he has prepared for the team's future...

Man I hope this is a great deal. At the moment I'm 100% backing the dude. I don't want any "new Mourinho" sh*t; if Villas Boas is good, it'll be enough the snap back the title!

I'm really excited about this choice dude, I know the Mou comparison is kind of far-fetched but you've got to admit it makes you wonder...hopefully "This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship." (H)

watching the U19 game against Sporting atm, we have a promising team out there...kids like Sérgio Oliveira, Katalin, Alex or Pipo are really hot prospects, AVB should take a look at them.
edit
we've looked very poor in the second half though :nape:

on other news our presentation match for next season will be against Ajax on July 19th. A few days later we will host Marseille aswell -> Lucho returns to the Dragão! :(

This club has a commitment with victories. Promises remind us a lot of 2002, when a predestined (aka Mourinho) came here and made a promise for the first time. This club wins since 1893 and I want to be part of it. Promises would be more from the same, a repetition.

There is an exaggerated impact of media coverage. People refer much to my youth and not the powers inherent to my choice. What was most important in this decision was to choose a profile and competences, and no doubt that the president took that into account. More important than debating a series of situations that you may think are important is to evidentiate my competences and my growth as a coach, a journey that I feel is visible for everyone.

Any FC Porto squad gives assurances of absolute success, they are done with discretion and with rigor. Eventual adaptations will always be based on this rigorous process, on aggressive scouting and then a final decision.

The choice of FC Porto is not to satisfy the whim of a guy
(himself), but for a new beginning, a new leader with new competences. I know what people want from me and I want to achieve the success inherent to the history of this club. To reach such a great club means a lot to a coach. There are many who spend years and years without having a chance. Mine has arrived now because a common body of ideas was believed in.

Maybe, for many, what I do smells like imitation and clone, but I reject that. I am much more of a Bobby Robson clone than José Mourinho's. I have English ancestry, a big nose and I like to drink wine. I bring a new way to face the game. I know perfectly well what is required in a top club, what is "sporting income". I know the target I have to reach and that will be the definition. Robson left a mark on me, by giving me that initial push, José Mourinho, with whom I've shared many ideas and life experiences, left a mark on me. A lot of people I've worked with in this house, into which I went in when I was 17, left a mark on me. From then on I also began creating my own ideas. Football is constantly evolving. I have also adapted myself, I've tried to "frame" myself with the modern game.

People talk a lot about game models and its organization, when nothing has been set. I know I have a game model well defined, if I didn't I would be incompetent and incompetent is something I am not. I know what I want for my team, whether in training or in competition, and I want to make it work within that style, with balance and with a Porto-like image, which is the most important.
Instant legend (H)

I decided to translate the Google translation into decent English since I think it was worth it.
Solid, confident and ambitious speech from our new top man, hopefully he'll achieve everything he's proposing himself to do with us.

Welcome AVB :bouncy:

I love how the press thinks he's Mourinho bff or something, haha (H)

That said, I sincerely hope he pulls some strings to loan a couple of Madrid's players! :D

If it's real, it looks to me like it's going to look better than in that drawing...

As long as we don't surround our logo with a useless white blob.

The new season has officially kicked off for us today :)

our pre-season will consist of:

8 de Julho: Jogo-treino com o Tourizense;
9-16 de Julho: Estágio em Marienfeld, na Alemanha;
11 de Julho (15h00): Preussen Munster-FC Porto;
15 de Julho (19h00): Trabzonspor-FC Porto;
18 de Julho, Apresentação aos sócios: FC Porto-Ajax;
31 de Julho (17h45), Torneio Internacional de Paris: Paris SG-FC Porto;
1 de Agosto (15h45), Torneio Internacional de Paris: Bordeaux-FC Porto;

In between the presentation against Ajax and the Paris tournament we are supposed to play 2 matches in Angola envolved in the Super Bock Cup...no idea about who the opposition will be.

abnout the squad, Valeri, Prediguer, Pelé, and Orlando Sá have been scratched from AVB's book, we are about to loan Orlando to Nacional or Marítimo but the other's destinies remain unsolved.

Looking forward to watching the new players in action, especially James since the hype is really high around him.

Kleber and Walter haven't been officially announced but judging by close sources to the Dragon's lair they are done deals, just a matter of details...still wondering if El Colmandante is on his way either!

Looking forward to watching the new Porto in action, who cares about the WC (H)

on another note, our kits are (as usual) taking forever to be released...bah :(
