FIFA 98 Compatibility Test: Continuing the Game's Life

For many years, EA SPORTS® FIFA 98: Road to World Cup™ has stood strong as the light but efficient football simulator on a large amount of Mircosoft Windows® PCs since the end of 1990s. However, after some historical upgrades of the OS and the hardwares there are many more reports show that the game's got troubles running on the latest and most fancy PC machines.

If you found any difficulties in starting the FIFA 98 RTWC program on your computer, please leave a post here. Staffs at FIFA98LABS will try our utmost to troubleshooting your terrible experiences with running up FIFA 98.

NOTE:

The following are the common problems known when launching FIFA 98 on a PC.

1) 'INSUFFICIENT MEMORY' ERROR MESSAGE

[SOLUTION] Adjust your Virtual Memory in My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced Settings tab, to the size of lower than 1GB. This should solve the problem in most cases.

2) 'FIFA98 game can not play, error message "SHOWDCT: NO DCT chunks dound! FILE cm \ cdstream. C LINE 1229"?' - found on Yahoo! Answers

[SUGGESTION] The appearances of this issue has been risen in recent years. Also it was discovered by a staff at FIFA98LABS after he did a big PC upgrade to the 'Core 2 Duo' class. We've done some investigations and found out there's no real workaround for it. In our guess, the computer loads the game too fast to let the executable (FIFARTWC.EXE) fully read the data. You can give Application Compatibility Toolkit* a try to see if it can do the magic.

Running XP pro 32 bit, 512 mb memory, no virtual memory.
Please help! Really want to play this! Works on my other older 5 year old comp, but not this one.
I already installed galah's patch and limited processor affinity to 1 core (was problem on fifa rtwc, but I got it to work in the end by doing this, but no luck with WC 98).

Assign the same set of fixes for any program you want.
For World Cup 98, the targeted executable should be 'fifawc.exe'. Hope this could help you.

Fifa 98 works fine in Vista, but the game got some problems in XP. Such as bad graphics or 'no dct chunks found'

I don't know why.

New issue found:

See the unwanted border lines on the picture above? It's a common issue one will encounter after enabling the anti-alias feature for vga's 3d settings. However, after exit from a game to main screen, it'll go normal.

If my memory serves me well, I had not seen anything like that during my old PC time (equipped w/ ATi 9200SE). Wonder if the rendering method for newer cards cause the incompatibility

For nGlide users:
In a .sdb file, only use the compatibility fix set provided by the official site, otherwise the game won't start correctly.

BTW, about the previously mentioned tearing effect, some feedback from nGlide users having an external VGA card, is needed to provide further information to ensure a normal screen display with anti-alias capability based on nGlide wrapper.

I am playing FIFA 98 RTWC on Windows 7, single core processor using Galah's patch.

I have checked the compatibility options for "FIFARTWC.EXE" and clicked for "Windows XP SP3" and the game is absolutely playable !
...The only issue I have is the sound, it glitches. I have read in the "Readme" file for the Galah's patch that I need to change the "Sound Acceleration Level" but in Winsows Vista and Windows 7 there is no more DirectSound3D.

My question is: Is there a way to fix this sound issue? Or somehow to convert OpenAL sound to DirectSound3D?

I am trying to use my logitech f310 gamepad, but it recognises it as the Microsoft Sidewinder and I can't use the skillmoves such as bending the ball during a free kick. Any help with this?

I'm playing FIFA 98 RTWC with no problems (except small screen) under MS Virtual PC 2007 Sp1. During creating VM do not forget to set amount of RAM max 512 MB. I'm going to try another virtual machine environments - to solve small window game's screen - You can try also VirtualBox, VMWare...

hi me using windows 7 64 bit.my problem is, I open the game normally.but when started match or pinalt kicks, I see so many dot pixel everywhere.on grass, on audience, except on player. it disturb me a lot

Fifa 99 works fine but sometimes crashes on my Windows 7 32 bit, I haven't tested it on 64 bit version yet. But Galah's patch gives option to change resolution. But it never worked.
Fifa 2001 never work on windows xp perfectly, even crashes after starting a match on my laptop. But when I installled Windows 7 64 bit in the same laptop, it started to work without any troubles.
But Fifa rtwc 98 never works on my pc (xp, 7. none of them can run) even if I apply all the techniques mentioned above. Help.

Happy New Year 2015, really happy for me hifty:

First of all, please excuse my English, this is not my native language

I've decided to register on this forum because finally after 17 years I was able to run FIFA98:RTWC on my laptop, after spending whole 2 days on different web pages and forums, after downloading dozens of patches, bug fixes, after changing laptop performaces FIFA98 is still alive!!!!

this is how I managed to do this:
1) downloaded the game from: Classic Gaming Network(need to register on page to download it) setup is cracked, so that the game doesn't require the CD

2) I used all the hints I could find on:

3) I run my Laptop(i3+intel hd 3000) with just one core and limited ram to 1000 using msconfig, than I restored everything to default ---> game runs perfect

4) I started the game not with agreement to WIN 95 or 98(it was unable to play very very slow) but with agreement with WIN NT, I don't know why but it WORKED!!!!

and that is basically it

the only minor tiny disadvantage is the sound in the game, you can hear son strange noise during the game but what the hack, I turned the music and commentary off

As of this post publishing, if you are using nGlide with VMWare Player 12 there are known graphical issues as follows:

- The credits screen doesn't show up.
- In-app text is blurred when resolution altered.
