Fifa98: No DCT Chunks found

Since reinstalling Windows 2000 I can only sometimes successfully run Fifa98. It tends to crash to the desktop with an error message: "No DCT chunks found". This either happens just after starting the game when the "EA SPORTS" slogan comes after the start screen, or when entering a game, just before the team rosters are shown.

When this happens, I can sometimes get it working again by changing the hardware acceleration settings for sound and / or graphics, but sometimes only a reboot will do. I contacted EA Sports support over this, but all they have to say is the game was designed for Windows 95/98, so there's nothing they can / want do do about it.

I already tried a number of older / newer graphics and audio drivers, no success.

i think I'm correct in saying that if you download Galah's 3d Patch for fifa98 from www.geocities.com/burntbranch then he has solved a number of compatibility problems with windows XP, who knows perhaps it will also solve your problem

sorry my french isn't up to much, were those the same problems that you have had, if so then EA may be able to help, as I didn't see any mention of Windows 2000 in them links. If this is the case, then re-contact EA with details and claim that you are using a different version of windows, there is a fair chance that if they solve your problem for 1 OS the same things may well solve it for all OS's

Have you tried running windows 2000 in compatability mode?

Also try minimising or disabling your Virtual Memory (swap File) if you have 512MB of RAM or more. Too much ram causes problems when using Windows XP and Fifa98.

Fifa98 runs out of memory allocation addresses when combined with lots of physical (RAM) and virtual memory (swap file).

Good luck with it!

Yes, I tried the compatibility mode, no effect though. I'll probably have to try to use EA Sport's support, but I have never yet had any success using their help when I had any problems in the past...

...failed to start on my new pc at first

Compatibility Mode set to Windows 98/ME
if failed, plus DirectSound Software Emulation (the dxdiag trick)

dont use fifa98's software renderer (run w/o d3d suffix), it will greatly decreased the frame rate
