EA Sports allowed the international assemblage of game journalists extensive hands-on time with the upcoming new version of FIFA 2009. Here's what we saw in this impressive demonstration:

Considerable gameplay improvements: Consistent with the company's improvements on its other football titles, FIFA 2009 exhibited some promising gameplay improvements. Most noticeable is the game's increased responsiveness. Passing, dribbling, and even the physical pushing and shoving that occurs in the game all occur at a much faster and more realistic pace than previous versions of FIFA. The game's graphics have traditionally been impressive, and the heightened realism around the animations has a huge positive impact on the overall quality of play. Here's an example: During sliding tackles, the ball-handler can adjust and prevent themselves from falling if their non weight-bearing leg is tackled. Another example is goalkeepers' ability to reach behind their bodies if they misjudge a shot on goal.

Customizable strategic depth: FIFA 2009 will allow players the ability to customize and create specific offensive and defensive play sets and strategies for different in-game scenarios by choosing between a variety of aggression levels and risk-taking.

Be A Pro: Players can create their own pro soccer player and attempt to become a legend by playing through a series of games staged over the course of 4 seasons.

In a riveting match between this reporter and a fairly experienced gaming writer from Poland, GamePro held fast to a 0-0 draw that held the game's Vancouver-based designers riveted. Based upon the raised eyebrows of my opponent, it was clear that Poland could not believe that this upstart American could hold his own on the pitch.

Why do i have the feeling this will only help the cpu?

only thing i really care about now in getting into fifa is REAL and ACCURATE faces. at least for the all the players in EPL or at least all the major stars.

the faces are hideous. also they need to add the real numbers for ALL the teams and add the real Name style font also.

they also need to add "create a team" that would pwn.

and it would be cool in manager mode after each other season you can change your teams jerseys and make new jerseys. and the sponsors you choose will appear on the jersey. that would be really cool.

what thiey need to work on the most is the free kick system. they system they had years ago where they had that ball and you used the right stick to choose where you want to hit the ball. and tthe left stick to aim where you want to kick the ball that system was awsome they need to make a updated version of that system.

the main issue with free kicks in general is you cant get any curve. you might get a tiny bit curve but in general no realistic curve. thats the main thing they need to work on. Curve is a really major thing in soccer.

oh the other major thing they need to do is make the reffing realistic and not rigged towards the CPU and also need to make it realistically able to take the ball off them alot of the time they run in a straight line and you cant take the ball off them. and you just move straight near them its taken off you instantly. which is dumb and unrealistic. also the CPU likes tackling you from behind and not getting any of the ball and the ref doesnt call it. your moving with the ball and 1 of there players steps right infront of you and obstructs you.. clear foul and they don't call it etc etc. and you just touch them and they get an immediate free kick and a yellow card. it is ridiculous.

also you should be able to slide tackle where you want to. this pisses me off. i dont like the game auto aiming the slide tackles for me cause almost of the time it f**** me up. i want to be able to slide tackle exactly where i aim the slide tackle. so i can properly take the ball off them.

also itll be cool if you could have like saya bullpen likething baseball has where you can have some players "warm up" on the side lines like in real life then when your ready to make a sub. sub them on. and when you make a sub you see the player coming off running to the sideline and motivate the person coming on (or w/e they do to the player coming on for them) likein real life insteadof the stupid way.

also when a player gets injured and has to come off. they actually bring a strecher onto the field and carry him off etc. and add more animations when players get injured. not just the same cut scene thing every time. things like that are simple and make the game much more realistic and should do that (the players warming up idea and the subs and injury ideas)

also the rigged BS unrealistic physics engine. i love how lots of times im trying to clear the ball out and it bounces off 1 of there players and bounces so exactly perfectly to there other players. and they continue on like the ball was passed to them. every single time you do that the ball ALWAYS bounces perfectly to there other players. like the ball is a magnet and just gets attracted to them. also i love how when you go to slide tackle the cpuguy with ball they somehow right when u slide tackle "freeze time" and dodge your slide tackles somehow. that pisses me off. so fake and annoying. like they are robots form the future and somehow know exactly what your gonna do how and when.

that is the main reason i dot play against cpu anymore. i got sick of the rigged BS. how its so easy for them to take the ball off you and impossible to take it off them.

also it would be nice if you team helped you instead of you doing everything example alot of time the cpu makes a pass and 1 of my guys (me not controlling obviously) can easily intercept it but just sits there and watches it roll right past them. and players i'm not using should help defend also. you know what i mean? make it like real life where the whole team is doing something instead of just the ppl you aren't controlling just moving around watching you do everything. kind of like be a pro when you lock onto a player. (with much improved gameplay obviously)

i think i've said enough for now lol thats just my views on what they need to change/add

My Prediction of what FIFA 09 would be like-Same old-gen but slightly updated graphics,Managers for all major teams[unlicensed ones like in EURO],Manager mode will have the option of creating your own manager, same commentary[For all languages] with a bit of new phrases,Updated Be A pro mode, new gameplay[like they do every year],more faces, more unlicensed kits, more leagues[Probably Russian and Argentinian league],the unlicensed dutch team but this time the dutch team will have good company as as many teams in EURO 08 were unlicensed, same referee Jin Wang refereeing in all major European and International matches, more cut scenes and more of the same we get every year from EA.$

Final statement:It will be better than FIFA 2008 and EURO 2008 initially but after a few days of play, you will realize that you have been playing the same game since 2003[FIFA 2004].

I will still buy it because of the feature of having managers in game and because it can be easily modified by all the wonderful patch makers without whom this game would not be a success and EA should be paying them rather than their staff.

First FIFA Manger 09 screens are there and they show the game uses old-gen again:

If FIFA 09 gets old-gen it'll may look like this.
The developers said, that they work together with the FIFA 09-team in this aspect. I hope they do not mean the PC team.8|

That SS still looks like the old Champions League 2004/05 game that they've used for the '3d Match' aspect of FIFA Manger in the past few years.

Yeah. It doesn't necessarily need to be old-gen because the Manager game doesn't need next-gen graphics and is simpler in the terms of graphics.

Sorry for the offtopic, but I think that the signature of J10 should be changed... Look at the way he has written ARSENAL...

More detailed features-list found on neoseeker-forums:

- Improved physics system. FIFA 09 has an improved physics system which affects both players and the football itself allowing for beautiful, powerful and deveastating shots and unprecedented levels of realism during a match.

- Improved animation system. The brilliant animation system seen in FIFA 08 is improved upon to include hundreds of new animations for players that further add to the simulation feel of the game.

- New player faces. 3D player modelling is vastly improved and now offers unbelievable similarities to the real life counterparts.

- Increased response times and game speed. Player response times have been increased to increase the flow of the game as in real life, while game speed has been tweaked from FIFA 08.

- Improved graphics, lighting, textures and crowd. Overall graphics have been improved upon once again. Lighting changes in real-time depending on the time of the match. Crowds in the stadium have been redeveloped for the new entry.

- Player height and weight. Player weight and height plays a cruical role in aspects such as aerial challenging and strength on the ground.

- Visible referee, linesman, staff and dugouts. For the first time in the FIFA series referees, linesmen, subs and ground staff are all visible. All have distinct animations such as subs warming up for their arrival.

- Weather options and pitch affects. FIFA 09 now includes weather options such as rain and snow which change conditions during the games progression. In addition the pitch is now affected and becomes more worn during wet matches and slide tackles.

- Increased number of teams and stadiums. As the same during every release FIFA 09 will increase the number of licensed club and international teams as well as their official corresponding stadiums.

- Changes to Be A Pro and Manager Mode. FIFA 09 will bring new changes to Be A Pro and Manager Mode such as camera angles and enhanced options.

- Enhanced online modes. FIFA was the first football game to allow upto 5vs5 online and now this is taken up a gear with full 10vs10 online. Matches now have options for simple 1 player matches, 2vs2, 5vs5 and 10vs10 online games.

- Interactive Celebrations. As seen in UEFA Euro 2008, interactive celebrations will be incorporated into FIFA 09.

- Greatly improved edit mode. Edit mode has now been changed to incorporate a wealth of new options.

FIFA 09 is set to become the ultimate football simulation. New previews will be released along with first screenshots by the end of June 2008.

- Improved Artificial Intelligence system. AI systems have been recoded and act far more realistically. AI now take actions based on the score and change formation as appropriate. Attakcing and defensive measures are used as well as risk assessment.

- Advanced tactics editor. Attacking and defensive styles as well as changes to formation can now be changed on the fly. Risks can be chosen as well as new changes to set pieces.

- Less loading. FIFA is now more streamlined and more efficient and as a result there is less pause and play due to the fewer loading screens.

Sounds really good in my opinion, but unfortunatly they that these features are for the Xbox360 and PS3. Is that a sign? Does this mean
FIFA 09 on PC gets crap-gen again?

I hope not, EA!

stay on topic. I want to find out more. I'm waiting for the next issue of PSM3 on the 5th june for the big article on this game.

They're supposed to be very impressed with FIFA 09 and they have FIFA 08 and EURO 08 so that's good.

I read on some Mexican website that the crowd is now full 3D, moves its heads after the ball and shows more emotion at all.

The bad thing is just that all these news aren't for the pc version and that FIFA 09 is likely to be the same as FIFA 08.
