Football Asia [2009]

Bobby

The Legend
One Continent. (actually two, but shut up.)
Twelve time zones.
Countless goals. (Except in India, they aren't very good.)

There are six, maybe seven good leagues in Asia. The J. League chief among them (though some say it's basically like what they do in Italy, this is all alleged...of course).

The others are South Korea, Saudi Arabia, the UAE (I wonder why?), Iran, Australia, maybe China, and Indonesia.

Asia has three continent-wide competitions, but it's not like Europe. The Asian CL is like the European CL, but the AFC Cup is for mid-tier nations only. Basically counties that are bad, but not REALLY bad. The really bad ones play in some fly-by-night effort called the Presidents Cup.

There's also Guam...yea.

North Korea doesn't play in any of those cups because they refuse to follow the rules regarding transfers and stuff. Contrary to popular belief, politics has nothing to do with their clubs being barred and the national team is actually a full AFC member.

I guess someone will update this. Probably not me, like my Arsenal thread.

What do you mean by that? India is OK. We may not be on par with the other big Asian countries but we are learning.

A big step in that direction is our qualification for the AFC Asian Cup 2011. Also we are doing pretty good at club level, where Dempo SC reached the semi-finals of the AFC Cup.

This year we are in the AFC Champions League too.

Yes, we have a long football history, and yes we are still learning. In a country that is flooded with Cricket, there are a handful of us who are making a difference trying to get India into the big league. And yes we are OK.

India always sucked at football..although we have a history stretching long back
I even remember we had qualified for a world cup by beating hungary long back but we never went to play cause of lack of funds and sponsors.

No matter what, football in India will never ever come up, cause everyone is too engrossed in cricket.

There is no investment here in football...the stadiums..if any..suck...
the passion is there..but only for european clubs.
there wasnt n will never be a solution to this country's problem in being bad i nfootball

I know there are Indians that are passionate about football. But the game is really on crutches there.

It's ignored by authorities who prefer to inject cricket with money (because Indian cricket apparently needs more money, forget those insane IPL contracts).

Goa is a good place for football, and to an extent Kolkata does ok (of the 12 I-League clubs, 8 are from one of those two places), but the rest of the country really lags in terms of infrastructure and player development.

That said, it's the best SAFF nation.

A VERY GOOD POST there Robert!

Qatar, India, Cricket Oval in Trinidad/Barbados(?) used for friendly/WC qualifyier, in June, against England/USA(I think it was the American game), Korea, Japan, remote east European countries....yours are definitely some of the most well informed posts on SG.

Japan is bidding for the World Cup in 2018 and 2022. Qatar is also probably bidding, China is rumored to be considering it*.

A strange fact about Japan: 2002 was the second WC in which the capital city didn't host a match, what was the first?

It'll be a hard task though. Luxembourg looks powerful. They even promised Holland a training venue.

(*China's bid sucks. Seriously, China has no rectangular stadiums.)

You'll need to build some stadiums. The MCG will be ok, but I don't think FIFA will be keen on other cricket ovals.

Brisbane and Sydney are fine already though.

Indonesia have also placed a bid with FIFA.

So, four confirmed Asian bids: Australia, Indonesia, Japan, and Qatar.

Yeah, but the problem is that Cricket/AFL stadiums are all too big for Football!

Melbourne have the best stadiums IMO, with the MCG (105,000), Telstra Dome (Soon to change name to Etihad Stadium) (55,000) and the currently under construction Melbourne Rectangular Stadium (35,000).

But Melbourne Victory have been playing their home matches for the last 3 seasons at Telstra Dome, and honestly, its really annoying to be sitting so far away from the pitch. The Rectangular Stadium will be purpose built so that should be ok.

As far as other cities; Brisbane have Suncorp Stadium (55,000) and Sydney have the SFS (45,000), SCG (48,000) and ANZ Stadium (83,000).

Other potential stadiums are AAMI Stadium in Adelaide (currently used for AFL) (50,000), Subiaco Oval in Perth (currently used for AFL and Rugby) (45,000), The Gabba in Brisbane (currently used for AFL and Cricket) (40,000) and Skilled Park in the Gold Coast (currently used for Rugby, soon to be used for Football) (30,000).

I second that.

I hate watching football in Olympic stadiums. It sucks.
It's the communist style. Same as all the stadiums in Russia. :clapwap:

PS: I love Football Asia. The commentary is fantastic, and there is just so much culture to the football.
