Yes it is, but I'm VERY surprised that FIFA's gotten so many votes :O It's frightening that ppl don't know what a real footy sim is :O But I guess if one only likes being limited to 4-8 buttons (combos included) and to limited gameplay FIFA is their cup of tea! You can do ANYTHING you want in PES/WE, FIFA is lacking this and a whole lot of other things.

Kinda feel sorry for those STILL playing FIFA after almost a decade of pure WE/PES brilliance :\

PES4 v FIFA 2005

I've been an ardent fan of the Fifa series since RTWC98, purchasing every subsequent incarnation on its day of release.

I've enjoyed the gameplay, such as it has been, as well as the editing facilities, and I've appreciated the successive improvements in graphics, from the life-like faces to the magnificence of the stadiums.

But there have been niggles along the way.

When I bought FIFA99 I played it "as was" and it seemed fine up until they bought out a patch for the Rage Pro card after which the fluidity of the rendering was superb.
Since then, all manifestations of the Fifa series have run choppily on my computer. I remember Fifa 2000 looking distinctly sketchy. The Render Every AI Frame line has saved my eyesight in that respect but they've taken it out of FIFA 2005...

...Along with a lot of other stuff. I can't work out why EA would introduce a great feature one year and omit it the next. Why did they drop the Free Cam from Fifa 2003, for example? Why drop team creation? etc.

Anyhow - I can't bear any more the lack of commitment to proper editing facilities, the shoddy rendering, the Player Creation facility that produces the same player over and over again after you've generated 15 players. And the various bugs that have led me to conclude that their playtesters must have given the thumbs up to the wrong game - everything from the screwy team formations in 2001 (I think) to the first CC in 2003.

What I've always wanted is a game that just works without the requirement of endless patches; a game that doesn't stutter.

Now that there's an option I've gone for it. PES4 is brilliant. It's true that Fifa has the edge on the graphics, the licences and (sigh) Motty - but PES4 has everything else. To their credit, EA have improved the gameplay massively this year (but for the 'vacant midfield effect' on most games) and, given the unusually early release date this year, must have half an eye on what Konami are up to.

But only half.

So - my vote goes to PES4 this year. There is simply no contest. The gameplay is vibrant and exciting, the scope for editing immense. It's a shame for FIFA as I might otherwise have thought "best one yet".

What I'm hoping is that we have a real contest next year. EA are going to have to stop taking their Top Footie Game thing for granted - Konami already have Henry and the licence ball is beginning to roll.
