Freekicks - Crosses

I don't know if this has been asked before? but is there a way to cross the ball when the freekick is way out of range for a shot.. and in some instances way out of angle I would say. I only have the option to shoot, when a freekick is like 40 yards out.. or when a freekick is allowed way near the corner flag. I mean its ridiculous to take shots at those distance/angles.

P/S Is it only me, or have you guys noticed that in some circumstances when a freekick is awarded.. you have the ref just stand infront of the ball and when you go ahead and just kick the ball, the ball just passes the ref as if he wasn't even there. Am I seeing things?
