One small thing i've wondered in going over this thread. If the territories occupied by Israel claimed by Palestine were legally held by both Jordan and Egypt - as opposed to a distinct Palestinian Authority - prior to 1967, then how come those Palestinians weren't simply repatriated to Jordan or Egypt? What was their status regarding citizenship?

Considering that both Egypt and Jordan were British colonies/ mandates the Palestinians that were at that time in that area were in a possession of a British/ Palestinian passport specifically designed to serve the purpose of that time Palestinian territory.

Egypt was independent in 1922 and the British mandate ended 10 days after the State of Israel was declared in May 1948.

Before 1948 that area that is today called Israel was in majority Palestinian but there was no state, no constitution literally a country did not exist (no borders), it was safe to say a no man's land but that area was under British control and the population that was under such control was given special passports which are considered British-Palestinian.

They were majority Palestinian because the mandate gave all religious groups Palestinian citizenship, including the Jewish population. There was no state nor constitution because it was governed by the UK on behalf of the League of Nations. What I'm asking about is the status of citizenship of those persons residing within the boundaries of the former Mandate but outside the State of Israel directly after the 1948 war; between the time Britain left and abandoned Mandate Palestine and the 1967 Six Day War. Between 1948 and 1967, Egypt de facto controlled Gaza and Jordan de facto controlled the West Bank.

That is a good question, but after 1948 and up until 1967 there was a large exodus of Palestinians either to Jordan or Lebanon, the question is how did they consider the Palestinians that stayed back. That is strange because even today if you meet some Palestinians that had fled Palestine after 1948 they still have in their possession the same old passport, of course as today they are considered residents of the countries in which they fled.

AFAIK, Jordan automatically gave those Palestinians which migrated there Jordanian citizenship and in Lebanon the Maronite Orthodox Christians didn't want an influx of Muslim Palestinians upseting the balance there...

In Lebanon the Palestinians ( Muslims ) are not entitled to full citizenship, you are right, yet they have a permanent residence awarded by the authorities. On the other hand you had some Christians that were amongst the Palestinians that fled and were allowed to apply for a citizenship.

I don't know why Hamas are continuing their rocket attacks ... that just gives Netanyahu more excuses to kill more innocent people ...

An article on the BBC suggested that Hamas were in a bind because Egypt was distancing itself from them and they had no bargaining tools for the peace/territory talks. Now they can concede a ceasefire and try to get something they wouldn't have gotten otherwise from it. They can do that so long as Israel are under pressure to agree to a ceasefire and the more civilian casualities there are, the more international pressure there will be. I dunno if any of that is true but it makes a degree of sense.

For me, I have more of an issue with Hamas using civilian as shields than actually launching rockets (although more so because if they didn't do that, it would be much easier to wipe out the rocket attacks).

That's a valid point ... I don't know why they continue their rocket attacks, that not only causes more causalities but also put all Israel-Abbas peace talks in danger.

To be honest, as long as Hamas don't stop their radical attacks, nobody should expect Israel to stop the fight ... Abbas should put more pressure on Hamas to stop their operations ...

Hopefully, peace will come soon with some positive consequences ...

for about two weeks, both my jewish and muslim friends are posting things on my facebook page to convince me (and the people on their lists) that they're right..

both of them are fucking not..

I dont know whoever said that, maybe Mandieta6, maybe someone else.. noone is innocent at war.. and Hamas, who do you think they are? Israel are toying with Hamas.. I, your erratic little turkish friend here, knew that they were to launch rockets to Israel 3 days before they actually did.. and don't ever think Turkey are opposed to this attack.. yeah there are some peeps that curse israel for that, but I know the government has agreed with israel and only our PM's son has accomplished a shipping line between israel and turkey, trading jet fuel and stuff like that..

just go on with your lives, seriously.. innocent people die, yes.. but you can do nothing about it because it's the way politics work..

can't believe USA can't stop Israel and Arab League can't stop Hamas ... they are all responsible for each victim ...

There's not much anyone can do anymore, it's going to have to play itself out at this point. And with what happened in Donesk, the world has turned its attention to a much bigger possible problem.

The US and the Arab League could probably stop it, yeah, but not diplomatically and I'm not certain they want to send men into that quagmire. Would you want your country to? I don't. There's a growing movement in the US towards isolationism too. We have a lot of problems domestically that need to be addressed before anyone could stomach more interventionism.

Why that's a bigger problem? ... I don't see any difference ...

Just watched some gaza footage ... that's so sad ... fuck humanity ... the worst race ever

Shelling civilians under the pretex that they are being used as human shields is as wrong as killing people under the belief they are.the inferior race.

Calling it a pretext suggests that the intent is to shell civilians. Is that your point? What makes you think that?

Deisler

Red Card [Being a douche] exp. 22/1/06
Simply because if they want to limit civilian casualties they will not close the borders and have Egypt do the same.

you forgot to add the "possible". It's a 50-50 chance that nothing will come of it, unless the U.S and Europe dare to piss off Russia even more with sanctions.

As far as your second statement, is this the one event that makes you say that? How about what's going on in Syria, Iraq, or what happened in Nigeria with the 250+ girls being kidnaped.

I won't take sides, and it's very sad what's going on in there, as in everywhere else that's having a conflict, but what he fuck did Hamas expect was going to happen when they started firing rockets? Why the hell don't they knock that shit off, it's not the first time they do this and it certainly won't be the last. Eventually a cease fire deal will be reached, Hamas will declare victory, they will celebrate, and those that suffer because of their agenda will be forgotten. It's also sad that this is happening because three Israeli teens were killed in west bank, then three Israelis retaliated against a man for being arab. Israel authorities have done the right thing and are prosecuting the murderers of that innocent man, but what about the killers of those teens?
