Bordeaux go fourth with win over Monaco

Girondins Bordeaux moved into fourth place in the standings with a 1-0 home win over Monaco on Saturday. After a first-half lacking goal scoring opportunites, the home side found themselves ahead in the 59th minute when Bruno Cheyrou netted a free kick following a foul on Jean-Claude Darcheville on the edge of the penalty area. Cheyrou stepped up and struck a low free-kick under the Monaco wall and past goalkeeper Guillaume Warmuz to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

The goal was one of few highlights in a tense match that featured seven yellow cards. It was Bordeaux their third victory in four games.

Another new signing, Fernando, was given his chance in the line-up instead of the Czech Smicer who just returned from international duties. Fernando played a good match on the midfield. Colombian prospect Edixon Perea made his debut in Europe with substituting Darcheville in 87th minute. The match was a return to Parc Lescure for former Bordelais Camel Meriem.

Denilson confirmed Bordelais! :rockman:

Brazilian international Denilson will play for the Girondins de Bordeaux, announced the official website today. He will be on loan until June 2006. Bordeaux directors did a good job on the transfer market in signing the attacking midfielder. He arrived from Sevilla in the night to sign his 1-year deal.

The 27-year old Brazilian has made his professional debut at Sao Paulo at the age of 18. He became notified by the international team coach and was capped soon. Denilson moved to Europe in 1998 for a recordfee of 32M euro. Real Betis was the happy club where he signed. The left-sided midfielder has won the Confederations Cup and the Worldcup 2002 with Brazil. He has spend seven years in the Primera Division with a short loan period to Flamengo in 2000.

Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud is very happy to announce the signing of the Brazilian star. The directors did already a giant loan deal in earlier seasons with the signings of stars Savio and Celades. Denilson is keen to swap clubs because he is not featuring in the plans of his Spanish coach Serra Ferrer anymore. The Brazilian wants to be in the picture for the coming Worldcup in Germany.

Wiltord gives tired Lyon a 1-1 draw at Bordeaux
September 17, 2005

A second half strike by former Bordelais Sylvain Wiltord gave Olympique Lyon a 1-1 draw at Girondins Bordeaux in a top of Ligue 1 match on Saturday.

Lyon extended their unbeaten run to seven games since the start of the season and have 17 points, four more than Paris St Germain who visit St Etienne on Sunday. Bordeaux are on 12.

The French title holders looked tired four days after their stylish 3-0 Champions League victory over Real Madrid.

Bordeaux, who have title ambitions, went in front thanks to a superb goal from Czech international Vladimir Smicer in the seventh minute. The former Liverpool player beat two Lyon defenders and fired the ball home from 18 metres, leaving goalkeeper Gregory Coupet no chance.

Lyon had to wait until the 64th minute for the equaliser from Wiltord who volleyed home a cross by defender Anthony Reveillere.

A possible Bordeaux winner from substitute midfielder Fernando 12 minutes from time was ruled offside.

"It was a tough match. We lacked consistency during the first half but we played much better after the interval," said Lyon coach Gerard Houllier. "They were physically in a better shape than we were so I'm pleased with the draw here. We had to fight for it but I would say it's deserved."

Bordeaux's Brazilian coach Ricardo said: "We should have won. I'm not sure the offside decision was right. We should have scored a second goal." He added: "They hardly had a chance to score while we dominated for most of the match. Now we must be more efficient up front."
