Practice being able to stop the ball dead on BOTH your feet.

It helps to bend your knees slightly and have a straightish back, remember you must intercept the ball at a comfortable distance (try not to stretch) and try and kill it on your instep. Practice should make perfect.

i use a small soccer ball or sometimes a tennis ball, being able to control that helps me when i use a regular sized one

i had a coach that pounded the fact that a first touch is imperative to being a successful player

practice with a teammate or friend by just having him toss the ball at your feet. all you have to do is return the ball to his hands. use both feet and use instep and laces. then have him toss it at your chest forcing you to control with your chest and return it with your feet. just vary this up

also try doing some sprints or long distance and then go into these drills becuase in a game your not fresh, you have to practice with tired legs so in a game you can count on your touch

fool around in your basement, using a wall

practice turning on your first touch, cause when your in a tight position you need a first touch to either pass it off or turn away from a defender

Good idea, but try this after you get better at controling the ball. This will become very important for game practice, but being tired makes this MUCH more difficult because your legs get heavy. Practice basics first then do this.

Also, it really helps to RELAX. This comes from alot of things like being confident and in shape. Something else that will really help is if you know what to do with the ball before it gets to you so that you don't have to panic. Also look to trap the ball into space if possible, this way (Heaven forbid) if you do have a bad touch, you can recover and then go from there.

One last thing, when trying this in your first few game situations, don't immediately slide into the center of midfield thinking that you are Platini or Gullit, because you may have too much to do too soon. Instead maybe slide out wide. This way mistakes won't be as costly, your confidence will not be shattered and you can maybe watch how players technically better than you do it and maybe after the match you can ask them their secrets. As you get more comfortable (and it is your position) slide more to the middle to see if you are capable of being the hub of your team!!! Good luck!

be prepared to move into the direction of space... don't always stop the ball dead (as good as it is to be able to control it like that, it cause you to tie up and have to take an extra step) so try and touch the ball into the direction your going, on to put it in space for you to hit it...

Yea circusme is right!....just relax when a ball comes towards you and accelerate when the bal is almost in your feet, then the most defenders will stay nailed on the ground!
Try to do it VERY much cus when you train in it ll be easy as hell!

Anyone have any good tips to practicing good first touch pass?

For me it is not hard to control a ball on first touch or just first touch passing in practice, but I have problems passing on first touch in a game, where the opposition presses quickly. I just don't seem to have my vision set when I kick the ball and say when the ball comes down from the air and someone is on me immediately I screw up my first time pass.

erm...just try one-two with ur frens as many as u can in training... dont afraid if u failed to make it... ;)

i neva try this coz i think i already av good first touch pass (:p)... but i think this is the best way to learn it quickly ;)

REMEMBER: DONT AFRAID IF U FAILED TO MAKE IT... thats the most important things bcoz if u afraid then u will not try it again..

yes, practice makes perfect. But also u have to have your head up and look around before recieving the pass. then u know where most of the players are. this helps u to decide quickly, whether pass the ball at once or hold up the ball for a while or go dribbling.

As a midfielder, vision, first touch, and creativity is very important. If u have good vision, u can pass the ball faster and create more space for yourself and your teammates. If u have poor vision, u wont have good creativity. ;)

Yea I think my problem is I don't tend to look around before receiving the pass. Will try to make it a habit. Thanks for clearing that up Houston.

my school team coach always tell us to look around before recieving a pass. But in the game, we always concentrate on the ball and dont know whats around us. While holding up the ball and doing dribbling, we also have to look at others to see when u should give a through pass and when to do a 1-2.

When u recieve a pass, u can steal 1/10 seconds to look up and your foot can step on the ball to protect it.

My friends and i usually play football on every Saturday, for fun only, not any kind of leagues. They always remind me to look around frequently coz i m the central midfielder who gives the through pass, if i dont know where the other players are, then i cant distribute the ball well. ;)
