Have I been poisoned?

I've just found the most incredible cheese, camembert, except now my nose is stinging with ammonia (unmistakable), is this misfortunate? I didn't know cheese have ammonia in them. How do i counteract this? Is NH4+ less toxic somehow than NH3? Because I have some very good vinegar I've been meaning to drink for a while, it's just been sitting there.

Toss up really - the ions will bond to other anions in your blood but the atom will want to oxidise so will be just as bad. Drink a bit of something slightly acidic like lemon juice and you'll be fine.

My dad was poisoned with camembert that had been left out slightly too long once. He couldn't eat for a week.

Agh, all the best!

A doctor would have said "Take an aspirin, and call back in a week if it hasn't improved..."

Not in America, they only say that in nations with Universal Healthcare, so they can see as many people as possible. Here they'd be like "I'm going to take 7 x-rays, 9 MRI scans, and send you to 4 different specialists. We'll get to the bottom of this problem!! Personally I won't do any of that stuff, but thanks for comming in. That will be $9000."

hey Dr Dave :ewan:

I'll never be a doctor - leaving uni after I finish my masters in 4 years :p

So much so that adding a bit of weak acid will do nothing to change the pH of it! In fact, if it were to change the pH would go up (more basic) as you are diluting the hydrogen ion concentration ;)

You get a masters in 4 years? Now that my friend, is ridiculous. It took me four years to complete my Bachelor's Degree, and people who actually finish in 4 years (the norm) are becomming very scarce these days. Then I have 3 more to get my Juris Doctorate, which I guess technically is a doctorate, but it's more like an LLM, which is a masters.

Yeah normally a Bachelors is 3, Masters 4. After that you can continue into research for a phd (Doctorate) etc

I'm going straight in at the Masters level - skipping past Bachelors. :)
