Help Ewan Run 42km (and live to tell about it) Campaign

Never ran a marathon but I've started taking up running again big time.
At one point I did about 15k (mixed up with some 10k's) but then got injured and sort of forgot about it...until I started turning into a fat **** again:mexican:

So now I'm closing in on doing 10k again. Although the other day I could only manage 4k which was a real WTF moment. Probably due to drinking too much the night before...yeah, I'll never be a marathon runner.

What kind of distance/time are you on now, Ewan?

:mexican: Spuds Sack Race for ya then.

Been running regularly 3/4 times a week (5-6K) for a year. With one long run (10K for now) in the weekends. Had a bit of an injury niggle at the beginning but that seems to have cleared up this year, thank lord. I could probably push on to 12-15k at a stretch. I've always run more for maintenance but ever since I've been keeping up, I thought, let's give it a good bash. Haven't done any real timings for 10k but hovering around 50 minutes. That and the usual assortment of resistance and weights training (ok I shan't overstate, a pair of dumbells) 4 times a week. Been reading up on the training plans on the net but would appreciate any help with this.

p/s The looooooooooooong term goal is Ironman (H). (Screw the swimming part :()

Aye, but they're rather hardcore and can get really technical on your arse. I prefer bouncing my progress off the likes of Mr Spud and the couch potatoes and resident drunks here.

How do people find the time to fit an intensive training program around a full time job? I want to join the forces within a couple of years and would like to get myself in a position where i can attempt the potential Royal Marine course. However, my training is far too inconsistent at the moment as i never find enough time. Luckily, i have a pretty heavy job which kind of compensates for a lot of weight lifting.

To make things worse I've picked up shinsplints from over doing it on my last run :(

I for one have found time by going to the gym during my lunch break. Despite the fact that I have tons of work, I'm allowed to take up to a two hour lunch break if I wanted to, so I use that time to go to the gym. Probably because I'm always producing results that I'm allowed such time. Sure I'm at work from 8-9 but that break sure does help. Besides, trying to go to the gym in the evening is a b**ch because thats the peak time.

I'm gonna try running in a marathon one day, hopefully in the next couple of years. I practice running everyday for 20 minutes at a pretty fast pace.

I can do (and do regulary) halve marathons (21km). It's just a matter of regular practice. One tip is to lift your legs up pretty high while running, it cost you less energy in the long run.

And get some decent mp3 player :p I die when I dont have music with me.

I think it's the other way round. Keeping your feet closer to the ground and increasing your stride turnover works better for longer runs and reduces unnecessary energy waste.

I usually hit the weights or do resistance during lunch break and then run in the evenings, although having to up the mileage would mean adding an additional early morning run. It does take some time getting used to but once you're committed to it, it gets easier.

Could we change the name of the thread to "Ewan is looking for a bodybag"? (H)

42km sounds long - you'll need all the help you can get :(

I found out that 42km is just over 26 miles....... which is of course, marathon distance. Yes, useless fact I know but the likes of me and Seán Spud would be absolutely knackered after running 50 yards (H)

What about 50 yards with a pint at the finish? (H)

Anyroad, I've got me a coach. :) Apparently the consensus is that I can be ready for a full marathon by December but I'm erring on the side of caution so I'm targeting next year's. Till then, will be trying out a few 5k and 10k races just to see how I fare and a half marathon into the mix basically to get some experience under my belt. I'll see you lads at the finish. :ewan:

Completed my first Standard Chartered marathon last Sunday. Still sore as hell and probably will not be looking at my feet for a month or so. Did a handtimed 4:37, though my chip time was actually 4:44.

Glad I did it. (though not very much so during the actual thing)
