In how much time? I ran about 6 miles in 1 hour...

Maybe 50-52 minutes. Didn't keep a stopwatch. 3/4 mile to the track, 14 laps (sprint 100m each lap, which might actually slow my pace overall because I have to recover), 3/4 back home. It's been awhile since I've gone this long (I stick to 3 miles usually as it's the perfect distance for aerobic exercise, although I've been slacking on that too lately). My lungs held up fine, but I'm getting shin splints. I go to the high school track because it's made of that rubber stuff which is way easier on the shins than pavement.

Funny that you usually do 3miles, as I usually jog 5km (at least when I was jogging I did).

Really need to start again. I might start doing some shorter jogs to get into it, then increase. I get shin splints too :(

I live about 1-1.5 miles from a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. I'm going to start running the stairs. Can't believe I haven't thought of that in the past.

Shin splints are a bitch. Those have almost single-handedly ended my love for playing full court basketball and jogging. Also I'm very lazy nowadays.

You guys know that the cause of shin splints is starting up exercising too hard after a long period of inactivity.

Is tight calfs (is that right? it doesn't look right) not a factor too?

I have never gotten shin splints but when I started running after a long time my left ankle and right knee were hurting bad. It took about 3 weeks for them to heal. Once it healed than I started taking it easy. I try to run on the sidewalks for about an hour once or twice a week. I try to maintain 10 min/mile but I try to run faster than that if I could... After running lets say 4-5 miles I get this energy boost and I feel like if I can run another 5 miles but I don't because I don't want to overstress my joints.

I think It's time to relocate where in Europe? or Tokyo, Japan? I'm debating if it's time for a new challenge. (H) suggestions? I don't know what European country is in a good economic situation and the food industry is a bonus. thanks

Shin Splints aren't JUST caused by running after long periods of inactivity. They're cause from incorrect footwear, running on hard surfaces for too long (being heavy doesn't help this) etc.

But being unfit, and pushing too hard to start with can definitely get them. I know last time I started from scratch again, I did loads on the elliptical trainer or on my bike before jogging too far on actual hard ground.

Don't just get any fancy pancy looking running shoes off the rack, get one with the right support for your feet, pronation etc.....

Function over form.
