W/E dude, I already said thats my opinion, and this is yours

I was just pointing out the bias thing because in your first post you stated that you wanted to stay unbiased but your post did not stay clear of that. I dont know how some of those were dives, maybe if it were Enlglish players than people here would think it was a foul because English players cant dive...

If that has nothing to do with it than why bring up that he is Portuguese?

Callum - No defence eh? I did not see much of a defence on Boro...or even Arsenal for that matter. The Spanish game has more flair and creativity but by no means is the defence weaker because of it. Infact one could argue that the defence here has to been more tight or better because of that. I cant remember which team it was but I do remember watching a program with some English youth teams and how their coach was telling there were to take the dive and all...maybe I should say all the English are raised that way too...

Wrong, by law any tackle that endangers the health of the opposing player is a foul and a yellow card. Look it up if you doubt it, the laws are not based on what english fans think it's fair.

Last year in a Benfica game Nuno Gomes had the ball in the box, the defender slided, got the ball first and the leg afterwards and Nuno Gomes was like 2 months out because of that challenge. Do you mean to tell me that's a fair challenge?
there is nothing wrong with a hard fair tackle. if you can't take a tackle take up another sport.

it's pretty much hypocrisy on a base level to say it's disgraceful to dive but support tackles that are likely to cause injuries and actions that don't even qualify as tackles.

Dear god, I swear footballs slowing evolving into a 'non-contact' sport like basketball :| What's fun about watching players just dribble there way through as the opposing defending just jockeys as any contact will result in the dribbling play dive to the ground. I was appauled by a Juventus game i saw last year, it was just a random game on Bravo, forgot who against, the fouls were just ridiculous, then in the last few minutes Vieira (who's considered a 'hard man' of football) literally ran into the oppositions penalty area an flung himself onto the floor, no defending players near him, ref awards a penalty.

Like someone said, if you can't take a tackle, don't play the sport. There's nothing worse than watching a grown man writhing on the floor clutching his leg after no contact what so ever. Other countries may consider diving an 'art' or 'skill', but really, it's just pathetic.

no mate, diving isnt considered an art or a skill here and we hate it but we accept it as a part of the game.

On the contrary you seem to even support these kind of tackles and consider it a spectacle.

Am I the only one who sees and laughs at the major hyprocrisy in this?

and if you consider fair a tackle that provokes a two month injury to a player, you either don't know the rules or you need your head checked.

Every tackle could endanger the health of an opposing player. A simple shield tackle could cause a clash of knees, and if you got someone sprinting you risk a shatter knee-cap, believe me I've seen it. So is that a foul, even though he got the ball 100% cleanly? Hell no, it's a good challenge and it was unlucky.

If you go in 100% you will not hurt anyone. Consider this tackle

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8QUzr94sYA

It is a magnificent piece of defending, 100% commited, one footed and it sent Joe Cole flying, and it was not a foul because the ball was played away safely.

Anyway I'll find out soon enough, I start my referee training in 2 weeks time.

im talking about tackles that are LIKELY to cause serious injuries. Like the ones you know that for taking the ball, you'll have to hit the knee or clash studs up with his leg.

That link you post has a really akward fall but there's no replay and the camera is too far away. If he shoved the ball and the leg he should have seen a yellow card by law but it seems more flashy than it really was.

virgo, have you ever played football in your life, because slide tackles do not injure, unless they are studs up on the ankle, I dont understand you, I guess you dont like when people tackle?

Actually, yes. If he won the ball it was fair.

By Virgo's logic, sliding tackles should be done away with because there is a slight risk of injury? What next? Tell players not to compete for headers for fear of them clashing heads?

As long as the intention is to win the ball, i don't see the problem. Injuries are unfortunate but for the most part unavoidable and unintentional.

no there's a difference between sliding to get the ball and sliding to get the ball and take the leg with it

You guys really have a hard time realising the definition of a dangerous tackle, and the fact that they're ilegal.

Now if we defended diving like you defend this :funny:

Well, i suppose the latter relates to the nuno gomes incident you referred to?

The defender is only interested in getting the ball away by any method possible in order to defend the goal. Given the risk of taking a players leg out with a sliding tackle or conceding a goal the defender will always take the risk.

I don't know of the incident you referred to. Was the defender penalised in the end?

the ball was connected to Gomes foot as one, the defender slided sideways to him and pushed it shoving with extreme violence both the ball and Gomes leg after, as one. Even if he meant to get the ball that tackle would definitely have injured at least 7 or 8 out of each 10 players in the same situation.

I just picked this play because it really illustrates this topic well.

The ref gave nothing probably because it would have been a penalty, but the general consensus afterwards was that it was a big mistake.

virgo just watch the EPL. watch how tackles are hard and fair and by your definition "dangerous tackles" and noone complains, because they are man-enough to take em and get on with the game. bolton is the king of 'em.

Yeah, I get the feeling that Virgo has never played soccer before in his life. I've actually been challeneged like Joe Cole was in that posted video clip and completely flipped over. I didn't get up and yell at the player, and hell it was my own teammate in training, if I thought it was unfair in any way I would have been mad.

Of course I think they should go back to the rules they used in the 70's when guys would be hanging off Pele and no whistle would blow. And you know what Pele did? He kept playing the game and didn't bitch like a little pussy. I can't even watch this sport anymore because I hate how it has gone from a man's game to a pussy game. Virgo, you are not citing the rules, you are citing what you think is true. The interpretations of the rules have changed over time as FIFA continue to try to protect stars from injury, but the rules have only slightly changed.

Nothing wrong with a nice, solid tackle in which the player gets the ball. It's no surprise to see how physical the English league is when you see what the mentality is when these guys are kids. A lot of emphasis is placed on the physical side of the game and as a result you get a team after team of rugged-ass ****ers that are hard as **** to shake off the ball and who play like they're made of granite, something you won't see anywhere near as much in Latin countries where individual skill and technique is top of the list, hence you see far more 'flair' players on the field, hell even defenders have some decent dribbling skills. Of course there are limits to when physical just becomes thuggery and trying to just injure other players. I've been on both ends of tackles which were just ridiculous. Like Shifty said, sometimes I've been tackled and gone FLYING over the guy. What did I do? I got up and went for the ball again. But sometimes I'll come across a pussy Ronaldo-wannabe and just massacred him AFTER getting the ball due to momentum and he'll start rolling around and swearing at me(lol! **** you too pussy). As long you got the ball and that was your intention, then whatever happens after is just an unfortunate by-product.

It's ridiculous that you have to worry when going for a tackle in the box that some pussy is gonna flop over and pretend to be injured and cost you a penalty. Too many pussies playing football nowadays, just ******* man up and take the contact that comes with the sport.

Exactly, Ive been tackled similar to that, and also slide tackled that actually injured me, its just all apart of the game, I didnt get up and yell I just limped off and was out for 3 weeks, but Im not going on a rampage trying to get slide tackling out of football.
