Maybe you have been duped by the romantisism of the "defending" your country bull s.h.i.t. Wake up then, it will not be the adventure you think it might be. Forget about losing an eye, you could end up dead and forgotton mate. Many Americans already are.

ericstarkid, are you joining the infantry or do you want to learn a trade and join the engineers for example?

Bare in mind the infantry aren't going to give you skills for later life when you have left the army and looking for work. Try and learn a trade if you can.

Is everyone who values human life a Marxist?....I dont think much of the education system in OZ if thats what it taught you mate. Or are you just thick?

ericstarkid, you're a braver man than me. I would never cut it in the army. I'm lazy, undisciplined and I hate following orders. It takes a certain type of person to succeed there, and hopefully you're that type of person.

Look, in general I agree with you and ideally I don't think there should be any military in the world, but on the individual level I'm a hypocrite. It's a good option for a lot of young people who are looking to get a head start in life. There's no guarantee he'll ever be in combat, and a few years in the army puts him through college. He'll have basic medical for the rest of his life (I think), and there are other great benefits. I hope that he never has to kill and that he doesn't get killed.

kinda gotta agree with Shifty really. Looking at it realistically (and possible pessimistically), joining the army had numerous advantages for people who otherwise wouldnt enjoy life at the time. I know of many who were gonna join the army and have ended up in dead end jobs that they hate, and they just get pissed every night.

Joining the army can give meaning to your life, you can make mates, think of what you wanna do after you leave. I dont know, i just dont see the army as the terrible thing that some people see it for.
