In a landmark decision, the Israeli cabinet gave final approval to the government's planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and four West Bank settlements.
Israeli ministers voted 17-5 in favour of the withdrawal during a five-hour meeting, just weeks after Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas agreed to a mutual ceasefire in Egypt on February 8.
It's the first time an Israeli government decided to abandon Jewish settlements on land in occupied Palestinian territories.
In a televised speech hours after the vote, Sharon told Israelis that the pullout would "give hope for a better future for all of us."
good decision.
