Steven Gerrard is English...he hasnt spoken in the language in years.
Hah (H)

If you ask me, it sounds like Redknapp is laying the bedrock of excuses for his inability to be Pompey's savior when they ultimately take the drop. Nothing against the guy, but he's signed non english speakers at West Ham, no?

Does he ? I think I remember reading in some newspaper when Benfica signed him he couldn't express himself very clearly.

But maybe you're right. One way or another, still a legend in my book. :rockman:
Maybe it's because he doesn't speak Portuguese :)

But anyway, yeah, it'd be nice if players playing in England would at least memorise a piece of paper with 30 or 40 football terms on it. But then again, why can't Redknapp just make the piece of paper himself instead of moaning about it? This problem can be solved so easily if he just goes to babelfish and prints out the words he wants them to know.

crybaby, if this was a problem, most leagues just couldnt buy foreign players.

what's with this mentality that everyone in the world has to speak english, while the majority of people that have english as their mother language can't speak any other.

True, it seems a bit arrogant. However, if I was working in another country I would try to learn the language as soon as possible. Luckily I'm dutch, speaking foreign languages is one of our talents ;).

Like it or not English is the 2nd most widely spoken language on the planet. So until we all learn Mandarin Chinese, English is accepted as the universal language. It has nothing to do with arrogance, thats the way it is.
Personally, whenever i am in another country,i endeavour to communicate in the language of that country out of respect.Anyone who intends to live and work in England should do the same.

Language Approx.number of speakers

1. Chinese (Mandarin) 1,075,000,000
2. English 514,000,000
3. Hindustani 496,000,000
4. Spanish 425,000,000
5. Russian 275,000,000
6. Arabic 256,000,000
7. Bengali 215,000,000
8. Portuguese 194,000,000
9. Malay-Indonesian 176,000,000
10. French 129,000,000
