I like Hail Caesar. It was like Burn After Reading in that it was short and sweet so you're entertained the whole way through. Don't think the film can be described as plotless, not sure what you mean there. It's a film that doesn't revolve a strong, engaging narrative but it's pretty much a pastiche of an era so immersion is far from required but probably discouraged.

There wasn't a strong plot - just an couple of intertwined stories, none of which is really overriding as the main plotline. I guess your point regarding it having no strong engaging narrative is essentially what I was referring to. When I said immersion I was probably using the wrong word. I think my point is that you never feel like you're stuck right into the story - you're never left feeling like you want to know what happens next. I certainly enjoyed it, but I feel like I could have walked out at any time without wondering how things ended up.

I'd probably have enjoyed it more if I was more savvy on the 50s film industry but it was still entertaining. I felt more satisfied than with The Revenant, not that that's a hard ask. That said, it's probably my least favorite Coen Brothers film from the ones I've seen. Worth a rewatch at some point, but it's far from amazing. Still refreshing in this age of 150+ minute movies.

That said I think I agree with basically all you've said - except I still feel it was essentially plotless. At least as far as having a primary plot line goes. I guess it could be argued that it was entirely plot - a series of events impacting each other, but I was referring more to it having a point; an end game.

Anyway, I enjoyed it. Not as much as I enjoyed Deadpool (only comparing them as I watched them within a week of each other), and I probably enjoyed it less than Zoolander 2 - but certainly thought it was a much better movie. Zoolander 2 I enjoyed in the way I enjoy eating McDonalds - I gave it very little thought, knew it wasn't really healthy, but enjoyed it anyway.

My point is that some films aren't meant to suck you in. The story is not the selling point. This would be one such case. There was a movement around WWII that focused on making theatre that was pointedly against the audience being sucked in and against catharsis. It argued that the audience needs to be aware that they're watching something that is not real because that way they can think critically about the play's message. Curiously enough, the whole movement was very much intertwined with Communist writing, which is a key component to Hail Caesar. A lot of the big musicals and spectacles written in the 20th century were influenced by this, moving from political messages to pure entertainment, with believable characters and alluring plots being secondary. Back to the film, the film is more intent on being entertaining and playing off 50s Hollywood, which means that those who make the most out of the film are those who are most aware of it as vehicle for funny intertextual play. A captivating story would only detract from that, and with pretty much every character a collation to some sort of Hollywood icon, the directors leaned in that direction instead.

You wouldn't criticise a musical for being unrealistic, this is similar. The story is just a thread to keep everything together.

I will (look into Bertolt Brecht), the rest I agree with. I realise I was probably sounding negative by saying the lack of plot was an "issue". That wasn't what I meant, poor wording on my part. It was certainly enjoyable.

As I said, it was poor wording on my part, and not necessarily meant to be straight criticism. That said, I also didn't realise it was quite so deliberate, and now that you've pointed that out, I think it makes me appreciate it more.

I finally saw Deadpool after deciding to wait till I got the chance to travel to visit my brother. It was ......meh there were some good scenes thou. Colossus was a HUGE disappointment.

Well.. Fuck 'em..

I was in the western area of Belgium near the French border. Chimey beer factory or something like that.. Wearing a Colombian jersey (Copa America one 2015).. A guy approached me said something in Spanish (Colombian dialecent)... Basically he asked me where in Colombia I were from, saying that he was from Bogota.. I told the guy that I'm not Colombian.. The guy laughed, but from his stance I could tell that he appreciated the fact that I was wearing the jersey.

When he departed the bar, the guy shouted "VIVA COLOMBIA", which I did too..

Anyway the point is that you don't see this kind of thing too often, which makes my mission to visit your beautiful country even more desparate haha.

It's funny that you're using the phrase "rehab" haha. Some of my mates call my vacations as "rehab" too lol. But all in all yup I had a good time and it was quite a coup for my health as well.

I'm in a peculiar situation right now to be honest. Regarding my yay guy. I owe him for like two grams worth and I'd like to (I'm incriminating myself here but who cares) pay the dude and get some more, but cannot get ahold of him. I'm basically the perfect customer, I always keep my word and pay on time that's why I can get as much as I want even on credit (this is no bragging, just saying). I've heard so many stories about idiots who need to get tracked down since they don't pay on time or whatever. I mean it's business like no other. Treat people like how you want to be treated. You settle on some date and keep your promises and from there on you gain some sort of respect and become trustworthy. Common sense it applies to everything though.
