Lehmann weighs up Germany future

Goalkeeper Jens Lehmann's future with the German national team may depend on coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

Klinsmann is under contract until the end of the 2006 World Cup finals and has so far been vague about his future.

"Whether or not I stay on would depend on my personal situation and whether Jurgen stays," said the Arsenal keeper.

Lehmann was chosen as the hosts' keeper for this year's World Cup, replacing Bayern Munich's Oliver Kahn, who was the number one in the 2002 tournament.

Klinsmann lives in the United States and has been linked with coaching roles in his resident country.

But a run to the semi-finals in his homeland has put an end to the criticism he faced before the tournament began.

Lehmann added: "The players are very motivated and if he left there would be huge disappointment."

"I don't think it's up to us to demand anything of Jurgen. He knows the whole country loves the new kind of football he has introduced.

"I don't think he needs any more petitions for him to know we all want him to stay on."

Without being dis-respectful to Lehmann, I think the only reason hes praising Klinsmann is because he knows hes got a place in the starting XI if Klinsmann is boss.

Doesn't matter anyways. Germany has great keepers like Enke, Hildebrand or Wiese who finally deserve a chance.

to be honest Klins did a great job, so he deserves all the praise he's getting.

But Lehmann's position is a bit stupid, for me he has a clear spot on the NT so even if Klins leaves he'll still be first choice GK anyway....hope I'm not talking out of my ass there.

I agree. I'd love to see Hildrebrand on the world stage, hes not getting any younger.

I'll be honest I've not seen much of Enke or Wiese, although with Wiese I did see his humerous mistake against Juventus last season.

Lehmann had a great cup though. Alot of people thought he would screw up, but I thought he didn't everything he could. No keeper would have saved those Italian goals.

I hope he keeps playing for Germany because it motivates him to play better for Arsenal.

Nope, I think if Klinsmann did leave, Lehamnn would most probably be first choice. It just surprises me that Lehmann is so uncertain about his own ability.

Enke was great at Benfica, and aweful at Barça.
I haven't seen him play for a few years now but I always thought he was a great keeper.

Well maybe he just says "Hey, you should finish it when it's the most beautiful". And in today's press conference he also said that this Worldcup surely is his personal climax of his football career (till now).

He's not quite young anymore ... I don't mind him thinking about ending his career after this tournament :)

We'll see ... and I'm not afraid, as already said above, we have great keepers like Enke (Hannover 96), Wiese (Weder Bremen) , Hildebrand (VfB Stuttgart), Weidenfeller (Borussia Dortmund), and some real talents (for example "Fromlowitz", he's 19 and playing for "my" 1. FC Kaiserslautern, he got Number One last season after Jüren Macho broke his arm, and he did an amazing job. By the way, Wiesen and Weidenfeller came from Kaiserslautern, too ;) We have a superb goalkeeper coach (Gerry Ehrmann) :) )

@Ebonix: Well that's him ;) He creates hundreds of really ... unhuman saves, that's really amazing, but sometimes he also creates really hard mistakes. But he's still young so I think he'll learn to stop that, too :)
Btw don't make me think of that game ... arrr :( This would have been such a sensation, after the great first match (3-2 Bremen)

Enke was voted the best Bundesliga gk for the past two seasons.

Lehmann will be 39 come Euro and let's face it, he saves what he's suppsoed to save plus some penalties. He's no Kahn by any means.

The goalkeeper position isn't our problem. We have 5 or 6 keeper which can play in the NT.

Arsenal rode Lehmann all the way to the Champions League final.

He pulled off some outstanding saves last season, some where nothing short of brilliant.

no, because he's better. he's actually able to catch a cross...

Haha, are you kidding me? Kahn will be recognized as one of the best goalies of all time, at his peak (99-02) he lead his team to a CL trophy and almost singlehandedly carried Germany to a WC victory - as a freaking goalkeeper.
Lehmann is class but not more than that. He's been far too inconsistent throughout his career.

Could argue Kahn has had better defenders. Dortmund and Schalke are good clubs, but obviously Bayern are the big dog in Germany.

Lehmann did win Arsenal an FA cup all by himself, and was in goal for 47 (David Seaman 1, Stuart Taylor 1) of the 49 game unbeaten run.

I would still imagine that Kahn will be remembered the most. Being a keeper myself, I grew up with Kahn being one of my idols. I knew of Lehmann, but was never really too interested.

And at one point he was being benched for some Spanish clown. He couldn't cut it in Italy, left after half a year.

There's no doubt he's had the better season and deserved to be Germany's No.1 but, when comparing their careers, you simply can't mention them in the same breath.

Germany in 2002 was nowhere near a good team, without Kahn they wouldn't have got past the group stage.
The Dortmund team of the Lehmann era was better than you think. They had a higher payroll than Bayern and were spending left and right. They won a league title and in the same year had been to a Uefa Cup final.

Yeah, it's true. Germany in 2002 was a pretty weak team aside from a few bright spots like Ballack, Schneider, and Klose, and of course Kahn.

And when you talk about Bayern when we won the Champions League, sure we had some good players, but Kuffour was the key defender. KUFFOUR FOR GODS SAKE!!!
