Haha. But yeah, as I said in the other thread, there was no way they could get this done against Bilbao's will in the time they had. But just think how good Ferguson used to be at this stuff - all the deals planned at the beginning of the window, plenty of time, all carefully constructed - and you realize how much Moyes has to learn about running a club at this level. They should have been working on this deal all summer - it's 36 million Euros!

Exactly. Especially a complicated transfer with a club that doesnt want to sell and a complex release clause in a legal system you are unfamiliar with.

Also you guys are aware that by signing Fellaini after his release clause expired on July 31 they had to pay an extra 4m? That's 4m pounds pissed down the toilet. It was obvious to EVERYONE that Fellaini would be a United player by the end of summer, why didnt they pull their finger out and get it done early, then have time to work on other deals?

I don't know about the intricacies of the whole process of a club buying another to comfortably blame Moyes, although he must certainly have a say in the matter so some responsibility as well. "I want him, let's not drag this until deadline day" would have come in handy a month ago.

Exactly - firstly, even if he was unsure, he should have hired a legal team at the beginning of the summer, given them his list of possible targets, and instructed them to prepare reports on the legal feasibilities. Then he would have been told things like "If you want to sign Herrara, you are going to need to begin the process this far in advance. If you want to sign Fellaini at this price, you need to do it by this date, etc." We are talking 30m+ transfers here!

I would assume he has purposefully avoided getting too involved in transfers this summer so as to give Moyes control and not undermine his authority, privately he must have been livid at much of the goings on. I would not be surprised if he makes himself more involved in January/next summer.

In England traditionally the final say in terms of transfer deals has laid with the manager, and though some clubs are now adopting a more European style director-of-football system (eg Man City and Newcastle) whereby a DoF and manager make the decisions together, sometimes with the DoF having final say, and others have owners who make many of the decisions themselves (Chelsea) or co-decide with the managers (Liverpool), Manchester United still works the old way.

EDIT: Of course Glazers can still veto transfers but they tend only to do it for financial reasons.

Let's get over it now. It was a disappointing transfer window but what's done is done. It was probably not the best idea for Moyes to hire Ed Woodman, an inexperienced guy when it comes to big name transfers as the Chief Executive of Manchester United but lets hope that he has learned from this transfer window and that he will handle the next transfer dealings more wisely. I have some faith in Moyes himself but not his Everton staff to be honest. If you want to blame someone, you have to blame Woodman, not Moyes. Moyes's job is to identify targets and Woodman takes care of the financial part.

Fellaini for 27.5 millions when he had a buy-out clause of 24 millions few weeks ago is a bit ridiculous but 27.5 millions for him is still not bad. It's not as if we paid 1.5 or double the buy out clause. Everton paid 15 millions for Fellaini 5 years ago when he was not nearly as good as now yet. The positive side is that we have finally bought a great (but not worldclass) midfielder.

Same can be said about the Mikel transfer. We bought him for 4 millions and a few days later, Chelsea bought him from us for 10 millions. A few days earlier, Chelsea could have bought him for 4 millions i.e. 6 millions "pissed down the toilet". It happens in football. Something similar happened for the stupid Bebe deal from Ferguson when Ozil was available for 13 millions.
