David Moyes is by far the best choice for us.
Mourinho will win a couple of trophies, get bored and leave, possibly in the process destroying our youth set-up and turning off a bunch of people.

David Moyes has no real desire to hop around Europe, he understands EPL perfectly, he can keep a solid budget, and his personality makes me think of young Ferguson.

European experience will come, after the last 2 disastrous seasons in the CL, how much worse can it get? Besides Ferguson will stay on for a few years to provide some solid advice and guidance.

To preserve stability and success at this club, Moyes is a perfect choice.

Besides if we sell Rooney and get Fellaini and Lewandowski... man

Another stellar article from Jim White

--------------------------

After what he termed the “absolute disaster” of his last ceremonial retirement announcement back in 2001, Sir Alex Ferguson said that next time he would go suddenly and without fanfare. A dozen years later he was as good as his word.

Following a night of fevered speculation in which a leak from the Manchester United players’ annual golf day spun round the ether, United revealed this morning that it was indeed the case.

The greatest manager in the history of the game in this country was to vacate the dugout immediately after the final game of the season against West Bromwich. He will take up a position on the board, where he will serve as club ambassador.

There was time to point out his achievements – the trophies, the dominance, the astonishing ability to stay one step ahead of the opposition across 20 years – but only just.

Almost as the words were delivered on to the United website that he was off, the speculation started about his successor. Ferguson more than anyone will appreciate that is the nature of football. As he has always maintained in his time at United, it is the forward momentum that counts.

In his analogy, the bus never stops moving on. Now the bus he constructed is seeking a new driver.

And what a job that will be. Standing every week in the technical area with the name of your predecessor pinned to the roof of the stand opposite will require some reserves of self-esteem.

Thanks to Ferguson’s efforts, managing United is far and away the biggest and most scrutinised position in English football. Get it right and accolades will be manifold. Get it wrong, however, and the pillory will be quickly built.

The bookies seem convinced the race is a straightforward one, between two men. Forget the romantic notion of Ryan Giggs or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being gifted immediate chance to manage the club they graced as players. There will be no risk taken on the inexperienced. Not with a business as financially significant as United.

That was tried the last time a great United manager retired. And for older members of the Old Trafford hierarchy, the memory of WIlf McGuinness taking over from Sir Matt Busby still hangs heavy in the boardroom, serving as a sort of perpetual inverse model of how not to plan a succession.

And the lack of experience that rules out Giggs and Solskjaer will count against a left field appointment such as Jurgen Klopp. He may speak such good – and such witty - English he could challenge Henning Wehn as German Comedy Ambassador.

But he has never taken charge of a Premier League club. He may be brilliant, but why take the risk?

Especially when the club can choose between two such excellent candidates as David Moyes and Jose Mourinho.

One of the things that is clear about Ferguson’s retirement is this: it may have come as a shock to the world beyond Manchester M16, but within Old Trafford they will have known about it for months. Indeed, that was one of his stipulations: that he be part of the process to decide who follows him.

And he likes both men, admires their methodology, believes they have the personal resources to take on the job. But they do offer different things.

Mourinho would undoubtedly have little worry about stepping into Ferguson’s shoes. His ego is sufficiently armour plated not to give a moment’s pause about the past. He is also a proven winner. One thing he will deliver to United is trophies.

But one thing he is less likely to bring is long-term dynasty building. He would be a quick fix.

Moyes, on the other hand, would be there for the long haul. He may not have won what Mourinho has (actually he has not won anything) but after 10 years at Everton he knows how to build and sustain a club. That will count high on Ferguson’s wish list.

This is a man who will not let the academy wither, who will maintain the club’s place in the community, who will subsume his ego into the fabric of the place, rather than use it as a platform to bolster his CV.

Which may be why the bookies have closed the betting on Moyes. He looks like Ferguson’s preferred choice largely because he resembles Ferguson in so many ways. The fearsome Glaswegian determination, the no nonsense demeanour, the long-term view.

My understanding is that the appointment has already been done and that an announcement will be made within 48 hours, giving the chosen one time to resign from his current place of employment. That doesn’t tell us who it might be. But the clever money has already piled in on Moyes.

He would be a terrific selection. But he will be aware of the risk entailed. A man of immense intellectual capability, he will have worked out what could go wrong. Sure he is inheriting a team that nicely mixes zest, skill and experience.

Sure he will be taking on a club so settled and calm it almost purrs like a perfectly calibrated machine. But what if, this time next season, his United lie third in the Premier League without a trophy to their name.

The bar has been set so high by Ferguson, anything but a title will be deemed failure. And how long will a club as financially dependent on success as United tolerate failure?

I was gutted about SAF's retirement. I was going to go and see the last home game of the season, but I can't now.
I've been privileged enough to have met SAF in the flesh, twice, and got him to sign my Old Trafford poster which I'll hopefully show my grandchildren one day.

In terms of the next guy to come in, it'll either be between Moyes and Mourinho. Moyes is basically in the same mould as SAF and is also Glasgow born. His appetite to win is also admirable.
Mourinho on the other hand, how on earth is he linked with Chelsea after falling out with Abramotwat in 2007?

Plus, he never says in a job for very long and he's a very erratic person, but we need a manager who'll give us stability and David Moyes is that man.

I wonder if Wayne Rooney will stay put after falling out with Moyes over his autobiography five years ago?

I didnt actually hear this news for 24 hours after it happened, pretty shocking. I expected a lot of fanfare when this happened, maybe him to declare a season in advance, even though back in 2001 he said it would be this way.

Legend, despite all the things I dont like about him.

Moyes is a cert but it should be Mourinho, for one thing Moyes doesnt know how to intimidate referees and you rely on that! Moyes could be a failure, there are big egos to manage, big expectations. If Ronaldo comes abck is he really gonna take orders from David Moyes? Rooney will go under Moyes, though I think he would have gone anyway.

Should have done what was suggested a few days earlier andbrought Moyes in as number 2 for a season or two first to get the club used to him and him used to the methods.

EDIT: Dont bank on Moyes being granted three trophyless years the way Ferguson was.

What infuriates me the most is when Rooney spoke about wanting to emulate the longevity of Giggs and Scholes and then he puts in a transfer request?

Some footballers might actually mean what they say in the press and others just talk out of their arses.

I would have opted for Mike Phelan for the position because he's been there with Fergie, knows the players very well but doesn't have the experience of club management.
Fergie was unsackable but now I think we'll see a period of incoming and outgoing managers just like Chelsea and the post-Busby era - Frank O'Farrell, Tommy Docherty, Dave Sexton and Ron Atkinson.

Busby and Fergie were one-offs. Amen.

Well he could never emulate them because he didnt come up through the academy, and as much as I love Rooney as a player you have got to admit that he is pretty damn thick and prone to bad advice... one of my friends' fathers is a sports journalist (Jim White) who regularly meets him and says that in person, unscripted he is actually so slow and simple he would possibly be defined as mentally retarded if he were not a gifted footballer. Pretty much everything he does is as a result of bad advice - look at the people he is surrounded by, his father is a bastard and his agent a former door to door vacuum cleaner salesman.

Maybe Alex Ferguson on the board will result in more patience with managers? I think it would be best for you if he did not become a back seat manager though, the new guy will be in his shadow enough already.

Looks like the decision was actually made before any of this was announced.

Oh well, I do really like and respect Moyes so I wish him all the best, and I am glad you havent nabbed a manager I wanted for Chelsea.

BUT I cant help feeling Sir Alex has chosen a man who wont mind him continuing to meddle in the running of the club (if you think about it Jose or Jurgen would insist on having a clean piece of paper and a clean start), and POSSIBLY (if I am a cynic) who is less likely to overshadow his achievements and longevity?

David Gill is said to be in Madrid right now. Wayne Rooney is said to be a complete ****.

Hope he'll join Bayern or PSG, seeing him play against us in a Chelsea shirt would be too annoying.

Moyes has always been an obvious replacement. I don't mind him, I agree with most of what Sir_Didier_Drogba said, but like most of the players we bring in... I'm used to seeing diamonds in the rough being brought in. I just hope he'll turn out to be a ronaldo not a bebe. Fergie himself was at Aberdeen when he joined United, he did won shit with them, but I wouldn't say winning the SPL is a lot more glamorous then a top-half finish in the EPL. I'm willing to give Moyes time, I'm sure the board won't expect back-to-back CL titles either.

I have come to the conclusion that all Manchester United need to do to dominate English football for the next 6-8 years is stump up £100-120m to sign Bale and Wilshire. Neither of their clubs will want to let them go but you need to make an offer they cant refuse.

Fergie won the European Cup Winners' Cup (Europa league today) with Aberdeen, against Real Madrid, and beat Bayern on the way to the final.

The biggest challenge for Moyes I think comes in the Champions League group stages. If Manchester United dont win the title, even if they are behind City and/or Chelsea by quite a way, people will let Moyes off, they will say he needs time, the other clubs are flexing their financial muscle and taking advantage of transition period etc, BUT if United get knocked out of the group stages (very possible) or lose the first knockout round to a medicore team, the knives will come out for Moyes, all you will hear is "what were United thinking hiring a man with little to no European experience" and it will be hard for him to come back from that.

Fellaini is almost certain now, isn't it? Also Moyes is definitely getting AT LEAST two seasons, I think he'll do a proper job.
