The 2009–10 season will be Manchester United's 18th season in the Premier League, and their 35th consecutive season in the top division of English Football. Having equalled Liverpool's record of 18 English league titles the previous season, Manchester United will be looking to break that record with an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title in 2009–10. They also have the chance to be the first team since Juventus in 1998 to reach three consecutive Champions League finals.

Rivalries

United's number one rival is difficult to determine. Traditionally, the closest rivals have been Liverpool, Manchester City and Leeds, though Arsenal and Chelsea have come into the frame in recent years. Currently, most fans see Liverpool as their biggest rivals, due to the success of both clubs as well as their proximity to each other, while others rate intra-city rivals Manchester City as their biggest rivals. The Liverpool rivalry began during the 1960s when the two clubs were among the strongest in England, and have been competing closely just about every season since. The Manchester City rivalry dates back to the Newton Heath era of the 1890s, and has remained fierce due to both clubs being in the same division for much of their history.

ManU is not a term United fans refer to themselves as. The term is only used by other supporters as a complete and utter insult to our club. The "u" is meant to be "you" by the rival fans.

An early example of its usage is this chant by West Brom fans: "Duncan Edwards is manure, rotting in his grave, man you are manure- rotting in your grave". The origin of "ManU" is a song to insult the dead Duncan Edwards.

Liverpool and Leeds fans copied this with their own man you /u versions to insult all of the lads who died at munich.

"ManU ManU went on a plane ManU ManU never came back again"

and..

"ManU Never Intended Coming Home" (if you combine the capital letters you get the word "Munich").

I hope this makes it clearer that saying ManU is an insult, particularly to the older supporters and to see United fans using it now is shameful. I hope a few might read this, understand and spread the word.

Rooney and Berba have the potential to form a great partnership IMO as both can score and assist. Berbatov and Keane were arguably the best attacking pair in the Prem, Rooney is superior to Keane...

Last season this partnership didn't blossom as both Rooney and Berbatov were played out of their usual positions for many games (Berbatov most of the season.)

I wonder how close Ronney and Rons stats would have been if Rooney took all the penalties and free kicks over that period. We all know he can do both... and he has the benifit of not missing in champions league finals

I believe that without Ronaldo and possibly Tevez, United's game will completely change. Without these 2, we'll have to rely more on Rooney and Berbatov for the goals and this will allow them to push further up front. I'm sure we'll see many goals between them in the upcoming season.

Alexis Sanchez has golden feet, his running with the ball it's like Messi's one. But he need's to improve a lot yet.

Dave Whelan was on Sky Sports News and confirmed United's interest in Valencia (and their cash offer) and said he expects it to be tied up within the next 7-14 days.

whelan is talking as if the deals been done for £20mil for Antonio Valencia. Seems very pricey for a wigan player.

Wigan confirm Valencia bids

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has told Sky Sports News that Manchester United have made cash offers for Antonio Valencia.

It was reported at the weekend that Premier League champions United and Real Madrid had bid in excess of £16million for the Ecuadorian.

Real - who are set to pay United £80m for Cristiano Ronaldo - have since stated that they have not shown an interest in Valencia since January.

However, Whelan has declared that United have been in contact with JJB Stadium officials for the past two to three months and that they have also submitted offers.

He told Sky Sports News when asked about Valencia: "They (United) have been in touch with us and we will be starting negotiations very shortly, I would imagine.

"United have been in touch with us over Antonio over the last two or three months, expressing an interest and putting cash offers on the table."

He added: "Things will develop over the next seven to 14 days."

Great first post! Valencia is a very good player and he is quite young too, so a lot of potential in there to be a great winger for us. Especially with SAF's guidance. People seem to expect big money signings, but I am not quite supportive about that. That's media hype and I suppose it's natural to assume for some fans that we've lost a big name and that we should get a big name in to replace him.

People forget, United replaced Beckham with a precocious 18 year old, who no-one had heard of - then turned said player into a world superstar. Who's to say that it can't be done again? (Mind you we'd have had Ronaldinho too if it hadn't been for that muppet Kenyon! )

Talksport radio really was p*ssing me off today, they were saying that United will win nothing without Ronaldo - and the Liverpool fans calling in verbally w*nking themselves off over it was tragically amusing! But then I tend to find Liverpool fans are tragically amusing anyway.

Also in addition to the likely incoming players, United already have several young talented wingmen, Nani being the first - but we have Zoran Tosic too and Adem Laljic will join us in January.

I disagree on the number thing.

7 is your playmaker
9 is your goal scorer
10 is your superstar and the face of your team

Rooney is perfect for the 10 shirt. Someone like Ribery or Kaka (or Ronaldo) is a perfect 7...and someone like David Villa or Fernando Torres is a perfect 9.

I would love to see Ribery wearing a United 7 and David Villa wearing a United 9 next season...but there is a slim chance either will happen I think.

Arguably our greastest number 7 was Eric, and he played in the hole - where Rooney favours. I don't think the world would cave in if he doesn't get 7 - but from a marketing perspective I think it'd be a masterstroke. I'm sure it'd be popular if it happened.

The days of numbers being tied to positions is long gone - but those numbers will always be iconic in football. In South America 10 is iconic, but ask any United fan and they'll tell you United's no 7 is THE shirt to have.
