Michel Platini opposes goal-line technology

"Never once in my career was a goal given when the ball was not over the line, or not given when it was, and you want to put technology in all of the stadia of the world for this? I don't understand."

Umm, this happens at least twice every year in big games. This opposition is bs, there has got to be something going on behind the scenes that provides an incentive to FIFA and UEFA not to have goal-line technology.

It's called corruption. Introducing goal-line technology would make it more difficult to fix matches. FIFA is a lot worse than UEFA though, at least it seems like that, in my opinion. Everything about FIFA is corrupt; the draws, seedings, votes, Blatter, Bin Hammam.

I don't see any drawbacks with introducing goal-line technology at all. It will only make it easier to be a referee and we won't have incidents like in the WC again.

Saying that they fix games and draws is pretty extreme, but not completely impossible nonetheless.

Hence why it'd be a good idea to introduce it to make it that much more impossible. And instant replays should be shown also to confirm that a goal is given or not. Unsurprisingly, that's how they got screwwed over with giving the wrong decisions in the first place, they had the instant replays shown in the stands too.

This.

Not specifically concerning goal-line technology, but it would start a dangerous precedent.

They're against anything that would lessen the power of the referees. Even if they'd still have the final word, the error margin for wrong decisions would be reduced.

And the "alternatives" being offered are bull****. Those extra refs at Champions League/Europa League are useless. I've watched in more than one occasion with different teams, a player getting clearly fouled in the box right in front of the "goalline referee" yet it wasn't called a penalty.

Oh its totally stupid, the amount of incorrect decisions in the box has not decreased at all and hiring extra referees is surely more expensive than implementing a camera. The stubbornness is stupid because eventually a strong candidate will come along who will run on the promise to implement the technology and he will get elected. Why not just do it now?

I'm not sure that's true. And goal-line technology might be very difficult to implement as you go down the ladder. And more referees equals more jobs, which isn't exactly a bad thing.

That said, I don't oppose goal-line technology.

Cameras would also mean more jobs. You need more technicians to operate them.

I think offside technology is gonna be way more efficient because offside goals happen every single week. You have questionable offsides in virtually every game.

But video reviewing offsides is completely different from reviewing goals. How would it work in reality? The linesmen are told not to call it if it's close. They let the play go on, and when the next break comes in the play, they check whether it was offside or not?

IMO the 4th official should do more than just holding the board for subs or added time. Would be great if he could watch INSTANT replays and communicate to the ref. I don't know why they don't do that.

I'd assume the current camera technicians would simply need to incorporate the new technology, I doubt they'll hire someone new for a piece of technology that's only going to be used once every 10 games. 2 or more referees means more job than one technician. The most employment that'll come of it is from the actual installation, but that will be given to temporary contractors.

And the technology will be too difficult to implement for offside calls. How will you put it to use? Wave play on always and wait for the data to come in and THEN stop play?

LOL, common are we really arguing here that FIFA is creating jobs that will help the economy? Those referee jobs are part-time gigs that are used like 40 days in a year and will have zero effect on anything in the grand scheme of things.

As for offside technology that's secondary anyway, we want goal-line technology at the least. But the offside technology can work in a way that managers would have 3 review calls available to them for example. So offside calls would still be the same, but if the team was suspicious of offside and on that same run scored a goal, a manager could challenge that call. So since the play stopped already anyway, a referee can quickly check the replay and decide if the goal should be ruled out or not. The rest will stay the same, so if a referee calls an offside, then it will stay as an offside. Managers would just have to decide when they want to challenge the no-offside call.

Even if it's not much, it's income, which would otherwise go into this technology. Minimal benefit beats no benefit.

They do occasionally, but I completely agree that it's ridiculous they aren't supposed to. I think it's settled now that the 4th official told the ref to send off Zidane in 2006.

And btw, you can do this without cameras; put a small chip in the ball and on the cross bar and flash a light when the ball crosses like you see in hockey games. This technology has existed for well over a decade, maybe a couple decades. And what the **** is this idea that everything has to be uniform at all levels. My youth club never had a 4th official for our matches, but no one thought it was a bad idea for the Premiership to use one. Same goes for this technology; make it mandatory at the top levels in all nations (I'm sure the ball makers would install everything if you chose their ball) and then up to the FAs for every lower tier. There is no problem at all.
