You see, I look at this whole situation (and others) and just shake my head at the ridiculousness of it all.

Heard on the news, as it seems Ms. Rice paid a visit to Lebannon government and amongst other things suggested they should take South Lebannon from Hezbollah control. Of course having roads and airports bombed makes it all much easier to fight an guerrilla group. BTW Aaron, the simple mention of the doublespeak 'rebuild' gives me chills...
Well Rice should know better... she would know that Hezbollah are not just some rogue outfit... that are fully integrated into the wider social mechanisms in much the same way as Hamas are... you can't just 'get rid' of them using bombs and bullets and the like... you have to give the people a reason to reject them... and killing innocent people isn't the way to do that.
My Two Cents:
It's a Shame that the Lebanese authorities/govt can't co-operate with Israel on taking out Hezbollah. Syria and Iran would be very unhappy about that. These terrorist organisations are not only attacking their declared enemies' societies (ie Israel, the Occident etc.), they're also fermenting splits in the societies in which they've based themselves. (eg. Sunni Shi'ite Civil War in Iraq, Hamas-Fatah violence in Gaza not too long ago)
But, people have to realise that violence won't solve much, if anything. Israel's now wanton boming has put it at odds with its neighbours. At first it was to get their soldiers back; Then it was to take out the terrorist groups by bombing thier installations; Now it's just escalated up into a dangerous new level. It won't gain any respect for trying to take out a terrorist organisation, if in the process it kills civilians, even if they may be part of collateral damage. That's still no justification.
However, the kiddnappings, even if there is a long history of spite and revenge, are also unjustified, and plain stupid. If your trying to free your supporters via demonstrating that you can and will do something like that, it certainly won't help your cause. If anything, it'll make those who hold your supporters in detention more determined to keep them detained so that more crap like that won't happen in future. Oh, It's also ironic how neither organisation actually recognise Israel, yet they've kidnapped some of their soldiers.
It might seem hopeless for the occupied Palestinians, but there was a real chance with the secular Fatah in the Olso Peace Accord back in the 90's.
Peace is going to come eventually to the Midde-East, But certain things need to happen on both sides of the conflict. As for the situation now, both sides have to stop asap. It won't happen immediately, but for some reason I'm not quite ashamed in being idealistic and astonishingly realistic at the same time. :fool:

Israel used cluster grenades on civilians

A US-based human rights group has accused Israel of using artillery-fired cluster grenades against a Lebanese village last week during its assault against Hezbollah.
Human Rights Watch said on Monday that it had taken photos of cluster grenades stored by Israeli artillery teams on the Israel-Lebanon border.
It also said that a cluster grenade attack on Wednesday killed one and wounded at least 12 civilians in the village of Blida.
"Cluster munitions are unacceptably inaccurate and unreliable weapons when used around civilians," Kenneth Roth, Human Rights Watch executive director, said in a statement.
"They should never be used in populated areas."
Violating a ban?
Human Rights Watch said it had photographed M483A1 artillery shells stored on the Israeli side of the border, which deliver 88 cluster sub-munitions per shell and have a failure rate of 14 per cent, often leaving behind dangerous unexploded shells.
It said it believed the use of cluster grenades in populated areas could violate a ban on indiscriminate attacks contained in international humanitarian law.
"Our research in Iraq and Kosovo shows that cluster munitions cannot be used in populated areas without huge loss of civilian life," Roth said.
"Israel must stop using cluster bombs in Lebanon at once."

cluster bombs were used in residential areas in Iraq too, I remember CNN had a story about how one heroic soldier lost his foot because he stepped on an unexploded cluster grenade... I think he got a medal.

On the other hand, yesterday, a five-year-old Palestinian girl was the youngest casualty on Monday when an Israeli artillery shell landed in the north of the Gaza Strip.
The girl died when the shell landed on her house near the town of Beit Lahiya, three other people were wounded.
In another attack a 60-year-old woman and her grandson were left dead after a shell hit their donkey cart.
I guess the CNN filters the casualities, and announces the number of 'fighters' killed everyday. Makes the news sound more "logical".
That's a whole different story than Lebanon. Probably thousands of families over there will be rebuilding their lives from scratch after this is over... if it ever is.

We actually get pretty accurate news here in Canada, the CBC is about as liberal a media as you can get. They certainly don't filter out the politically unpleasent details like you'd get from CNN or FOX News in the States..
