I'm going to buy a 2010 Civic when I come back from Afghanistan. Anyone else have suggestions in that price range? I'm mostly attracted to the fact that Civics last forever and get good mileage.

I assume you want the sedan Civic right? why not get the Accord instead? it's miles better imo. I believe it's sold as Acura TSX in the US. heard they're discontinuing the Euro version, pity.

on the BMW topic, I won't get one until I can really afford it. that means nav, leather, decent engine and not caring about MPG. I'd rather have a fully loaded Mazda or the like than a poverty spec BMW.

that really depends on the segment..

if say, you're buying a 1 or 3 series just go for the basic ones.. they're exquisitely built, well handling, safe and good looking cars.. I had leather, TV, heated seats, USB, Sunroof, basically everything with my E90.. they cost me half the price of the actual car.. but the leather was not very brilliant, you cannot use TV/DVD while driving, even the top notch stereo isn't as brilliant as it should be on a 3 series (yeah harman kardon sucks in BMW)..

but it's entirely a different story with the 5-7 series.. never buy a basic 5.. comfort seats with nappa leather is awesome, bang&olufsen is good (yeah only good after I heard that Bowers&Wilkins in Maserati), night vision, heated-cooled seats etc..

I bought my Golf very basic, I bought my Passat mid spec.. yeah I like leather seats, keyless access but I want them in my BMW or the new Jag XJ (which will definitely be my next car), not in my passat..

My brother had a 318i ages ago. That's as entry level as they get really. And when I went for a drive in it I was amazed. Compared to the vehicles I had driven it just felt like it was on rails.

We have Accords here. I don't know what version exactly, it'll come down to price. I want a manual transmission though. I might consider an Accord now that I'm looking at prices, I assumed they would be more expensive, but somehow seem to be cheaper. The coupe does look really nice. Anyone else with a suggestion? I have no intention of getting married, so 2 door is fine.

I find the new Mazda 3 gorgeous, both inside and out.

however they had to raise prices to match the overall improvement. add 3 to 5 grand to the top spec of that and you could be looking at a 1 Series.

I also love the Mazda 3... seems like a good car inside and out. If I wasn't afraid for the monthly payments of it I would most likely get one of them. Maybe next year...

A bit offtopic, but since you mentioned it. You're getting deployed? And for how long? Just curious, i bet it'll be quite an experience for you. I kind of know one person who's been there as well, but haven't asked him anything about it.

Mmm.. Well what can i say, good luck i guess! Were you expecting it? After a friend of mine finished his military service which is mandatory in Estonia, said he wanted to go to Afghanistan as well, but that was in 2008 or 09 i believe, and he changed his mind. Mostly because of his friends.

And for how long? Just curious. I hope you'll have a great experience and get back safe!

Oh, that's nice of you. I wish i could give you some tips, but the person i know who has been there probably doesn't want to do anything with me, i think. For obvious reasons.

I don't think he needs tips from you. Sure there are plenty of trained and experienced guys that can help him with that.

Yeah surely. I was just trying to help. And it wouldn't be from me, as i said i know a guy who's been there and other places, but since i don't really talk to him, it would be weird to ask. We just used to be drinking buddies like 5? 6? years ago. He's moved on and so have i.

that's true. thing is, the most powerful engine on the Mazda is the equivalent of an 118i. kind of mid range, cause there's 114i and 116i too, but 170hp is enough for me. I don't really need nav to be fair, unless I'd be travelling abroad more than twice a year as it is now, so I could cross that off the list. not too much into premium stereos either nor sunroof. but I'd still want heated seats and leather. that adds up to exactly 30k. 5k more expensive than the fully loaded Mazda 3. still a lot for a compact car, however I don't need anything larger as my gf might be driving it too and maybe I'll pass it onto her in a few years.

question is, is it 5 grand better? is it that good to drive and that well built? I keep seeing bimmer owners referring to the 1 series like it wouldn't be a BMW.
