My Coaching Career

Well I finally got the gig. My best mate (who conveniently happens to be team captain) got me the job of coaching our school senior girls soccer team this year as no teachers wanted to do it (H)

So here I am, no tactical knowlege whatsoever about to embark on the almost impossible mission of making a team click together and play soccer, when half of them have never kicked a ball before.
Oh well I've seen those movies where-... ah forget it.

Looking back at previous scorelines for our school in the year before they're not very promising...
9-0... 8-0... 6-1... 7-0...

So I've got three weeks to get this team of chicks to play some decent soccer... I get my first looks at them soon, but I'm not expecting much...

I have a feeling we won't be playing the attacking style of Brazil or something this year...
10-0-1 formation anyone? :p

Use "Route 1 to de Vries"

Requirements:
- long, lenient chick at the front, should be able to use head
- 9 defenders

Don't forget in that tactic:

- "Headless Chicken Wyness" as a midfielder meant to run up to support and get on the end of knock-downs from De Vries. Really wins about 3 all year.
- "Blawin' oot erse Neilson" right-back who has a fetish at running the length of the park for 90 minutes, inevitably about to collapse when their left midfielder darts at them
- "Elvis and Webster" centre halfs; they should just head. And head. And sometimes make a (H) solo run.
- "Hold hands with Webster" Defensive midfielder: Caught out FAR too deep, making the other midfielder run like fook.
- "I may as well run with it Hartley" - Exactly what it says on the tin. Care where you run to.
- "Right back at Left Back Maybury" style. Right footed? Perfect on the left side! Make sure that she switches to her right at ALL times. Neilson style marathon runs from box to box recommended.
- "Lightweight Hamill" winger. Just make sure you can turn with a ball. And float it. Even when you're shooting.

All set? Great! Let the 1-0's commence. (H)

Yea I think for girls soccer it's most important to have a couple mammoth chicks at the back to defend like a wall and a couple of those at the front to overpower defenses.

Sorta like Vagegast suggested, have a tall girl with a good shot at the front and just launch the balls to her, if ur team have poor ball control and skills.

PS: Don't play 9-0-1, it won't work. (just in case u were not being sarcastic...) :p

No tall chicks this year :( Not even a goalie...

Our captain plays state for our year level, but everyone else pretty much is :sb9:

We don't even have mammoth chicks! Quite depressing really :p

Make America Great Again
Well, I have a dream of taking over the coaching gig at some local U-12 or around there boys team when I graduate and just coach them until they graduate, so I have thought about the best way to coach at least a little bit. Here's what I would do.

Start your best players. Positions aren't as important as getting your best 11 on the field. I'm not saying that if your 10 best players are midfielders to play with 10 mids, but find out the best of those who would be able to play defense or attack.

Next, I am probably biased because most of my coaches were fitness based, but fitness is really important. Dedicate at least a combined 30 minutes each practice to running.

After that improve technical skills and field awareness. Work on stuff that everyone needs to know, passing, defending/attacking off set pieces and specifically corners. If the ball hits the ground they owe you sit ups, or at least something. That way they'll get over any tentativeness about attacking the ball. We had a drill where there were 3 people running from the half line to the goal, two people in the middle and 1 on the wing, it starts with a pass from the middle to the wing who takes it up the sideline and crosses it in to the other two. Good drill. Also and 5v2 or keep away is great.

And then just so they like comming to practice you always end with some type of scrimmage game. So like 30 minutes running, and hour improving skills and teamwork, and then 30 minutes playing a game. And if they lose 9-0 it changes to and hour of running and and hour of hard drills.

Good conditioning drills include header sit-ups, sections (where you sprint one section, jog one, sprint two, jog one, sprint three, jog one, etc. for as many as you say but 6 or 4 is common), diving headers (where you start on the sideline on your stomach and you get up and your partner throws you a ball for a diving header and then you repeat...across the field and then switch the header and the thrower). That's a good basic drill because you can do it with anything, volley passes back to the thrower, or chest traps to volleys to the passer, or anything.

Anyway, that's some of the stuff. Personally I think if you have girls in just insanely good condition that can run all day you're automatically better than half the girls teams out there. And if they go agressively for 50/50 balls and headers, they're better than 75%.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and since you already have a good relationship with the captain, ask her about certain players and get honest answers. Of course from her you need her to not undermine your training. If you're making them run for an hour straight you don't want your captain complaining with the rest, you want her saying "come on guys, this is how we'll get better, the coach is right" and that ****.

Oh, and also don't forget to give frequent water breaks.

carry tylenol or some sort of pain reliever. your girls will get "cramps", and that will ruin games.

really, be a lifesaver and earn a "whoopie" if lucky. they're bound to forget what they were supposed to carry and use instead of getting it from the coach. good luck. :ewan:
