New system needed

hey guys,

it appears that after 5 years of using basically the same tactic, its finally been mastered by other teams. Start of the season 3 losses in first 6 games :( and generally very poor performances with a severe lack of consistency. I've sold quite a few big name players this season (Cambiasso, Rosicky, Fabregas) and feeling that i've got decent replacements. I've been trying out a new (for this team at least) 4-5-1 formation which seems to be fairly successful but still a lack of goals. And as always, injuries galore :nape:

Baptista has only been back about a month from an 8 month injury and his stats are looking pretty miserable :(

RVN is now 34 but after bagging 40 goals last season i'm keeping hold of him for the moment.

Nik Besagno is really developing into a promising player now, this is first season as a real first team player.

Any help?

well, what's your budget? is Baines any good? coz with someone like aurelio or grosso you'd probably be much more covered at the left side of the defense..otherwise it's maybe just a matter of your team adapting to the 4-5-1 tactic, and try maybe to get a new CM, to cover Sneijder and De Jong, someone like Assunção, Mascherano, Alex maybe..

Baines has been incredible at Left-Back, very consistant and has had an average of 9-10 assists in the league alone for the last 3 years, gets another 6-7 in Europe etc. Left-Back is one position i'm not really worried about, Doucet who is a youngster seems to be good backup.

My budget is not a problem at all, after all the success i've had its around £200mill IIRC but i'm just a stingy bastard (:/)

Mascherano is at Barcelona and looks like it'll cost a bomb to get him from them :s Alex is now 33 and Assuncao 34 lol

Cover for CM Joyeusaz (great youngster), Leozinho, Poujol and Besagno (pushing Srna to RB and playing Besagno in his actual natural position). I suppose if needed Tuncay, Rooney etc. can play there adequately.

Rafinha is a confirmed signing for January now.

4-5-1 and general modifications are a great tactic to play not also at home, but almost everytime away. However, you have to have a very good striker and an awesome DM (like Nik, for example, though in my game he works better as a defender). I think Wayne Rooney alone can be able to do it. Be sure to give him space to pressure and to run with ball, works wonders. Man, I could advice you more things, because this isn't enough...if you want to, tell me, I'm quite lazy right now :P

Haha, my advice is to change the tactic, just put some effort in creating a well balanced 4-4-2 with active wingers, full backs, defensive and offensive midfielders and you'll be getting goals....

your squad look great

true, about the squad there is no worries then, good roster...is Frey the best you can get right now? i mean with 200mill...:p

anyway i can't see what the problem is, so maybe give it some time, you would've done better with some pre-season friendlies...

Yeah, I was just about to post something like "how about that Leighton Baines?" If you can get him and Vanden Borre at the beginning of a game you're set at fullback with world class players for the next 12 years.

Whenever you've got the time dude, it would be greatly appreciated (H)

Shifty - i failed getting VDB - chose Barcelona over my ridiculously high wage offer... moved onto Villareal for a season... then to Milan. Now Milan reject any offer i make for the bastard :(

Fil - Frey has been great and Ustari looks set for top things with great stats (will post later if i cba)

Horatiu - Yea thats the problem at the moment... i really can't be arsed to sit down and work out a 4-4-2 that really works and would be real effective, i just get so bored with 4-4-2 :p

Ok, now I'm not lazy.

Whenever I use a 4-5-1 with any team, with the right modifications, it gets to work out really well...you need to have the right players though...and with that players you have...no problem creating a good 4-5-1. Actually, that's more of a 4-3-3, as Ronaldo and Tuncay advance till the wing ends. Still, making 4-5-1 with that squad you have is actually wasting awesome players...

I would try Rooney or RVN in the front, and have Kerlon as super-sub. Give them space to run with the ball and forward runs often, and pressure with them some 2 ticks above the team setting for pressure.

Wings for Ronaldo, Tuncay and Adu (rotation is needed in these last two). If you want crosses directly to your area (RVN), try to get them to make forward runs often and cross a lot if so...as Rooney doesn't have so much aerial ability (but still good), crossing may be useful, but they should cut into the middle, making run with ball a lot...and if they have good long range, why not to use it?

Now listen, how do Sneijder and Baptista do at MC position? Cause it isn't the same as AMC...if they aren't fully adapted there...adapt them. Sneijder should make a box-to-box, also helping defense, and Baptista makes a "Lampard"...be sure also to test Leozinho, because he may be better than Baptista in that position, at least for me it does.

Besagno can take care of cleaning opponents attack, and rarely goes up front, except in set pieces, but be sure tu use his long range and passing ability.

Be sure to have at least one left-back, or right-back that advance well into the opponents half line. I dunno any of your players, check their abilities and judge for yourself...really, the left-backs and right-backs are a crucial part in FM 2006. If they are good, they really do massive damage!

Central defenders get everything on rarely, no freedom, and super defensive...their job is to mark, cut, and stuff, not to dribble like Ronaldinho...

That's it for individual. Well, for team, maybe you will have to decide which ticks may suite better your team and style of playing 4-5-1/4-3-3 :jambo:

cheers for the advice dude (Y)

i'll look into it when i'm slightly more awake :p

About RVN, at the moment i'm hesitant at giving him a constant starting spot what with him being 34 now. And out of my other strikers (Kerlon, Defoe and Rossi) i dont really have anyone with similar charicteristics to RVN at all, last year Rossi and Rooney was working pretty well and i think when Rossi is back fit i'll have a go with that, Kerlon doesn't seem to be performing half as well as i wanted/expected and Defoe has been a pretty solid backup striker so far.

Daz

Everyone's Favourite Diabetic
well considering he got 40+ goals (cant remember exctly) last season i didn't really want to drop him out of the squad completely :p.

I'm tempted to offload Kerlon soon.

Honestly, you should be able to easily win your league with that squad, and challange for CL.

yea i have done for the past few years, but this season i've got off to such a terrible start in the EPL and just can't manage to get the results.

Looing at potential target men, these seem the top 5 to look at:

1. Fred

Pros: Already established, Impressive Stats with no obvious weaknesses

Cons: Would most probably cost a bomb (even with a £200mill budget i'd be reluctant to overpay)

2. Robert Acquafresca

Pros: Great heading, passing and finishing, comparitively cheap, good record for Lille (61 goals in 80 matches)

Cons: Disappointing workrate and team work stats, unproven in top league

3. Fernando Genro

Pros: Decent stats; heading, technique and composure especially, £9mill release clause

Cons: Poor natural fitness

4. Stephen Makinwa

Pros: out of favour at Chelsea so could be got on the cheap, fast.

Cons: comparitively poor looking stats.

5. Pablo Vitti

Pros: Incredible looking stats, could be acquired for under £10mill.

Cons: Terrible work rate and teamwork

Sneijder is natural and Baptista Accomplished. So no problem there.

Joyeusaz also looks pretty decent at MC, so he's another option i have. But Baptista and Sneijder obvious first choice.

Working on tactic later.
