It's a phenomenally emotive, complex issue, and ultimately neither side will concede that they are in the wrong, though my two cents are that Israel is correct to defend herself from constant attacks. The reality is that emotion cannot be left out of this argument; for those with a vested interest, the situation is often clouded with the pain of being affected by the trouble, every wrong of the other side constantly highlighted (which I do concede both have exacerbated the conflict, intentionally or not).

The way forward long-term - as unpalatable as it may seem at the moment to either side - to for the Israelis to open a dialogue with Hamas, who would most likely do what the Provisional IRA did in Northern Ireland and put on suits in place of balaclavas. Once that happens, you find that those orchestrating the violence rarely return to the streets once they've had a sniff of power.

As bold and as patriotic a sentiment that the phrase "We do not deal with terrorists" entails, there does have to be some give from the Israelis and an outbreak of realpolitik on both sides if this situation is ever to improve.

I think this latest war was necessary for the survival of the main ruling parties in both Gaza and Israel. Back in October last year Tzipi Livni's Kadima party failed to form a coalition government so she decided to call for general elections in February. Both Kadima and their main partner in government, the Labor party, were continuing to lose ground to the more hardline Likud, and other smaller parties like the ultra-rightwing Yisrael Beiteinu which essentially calls for the ethnic cleansing of Arabs inside Israel. Israelis were concerned about security and there was considerable doubt that the woman leading Kadima would be able to deliver, even in the early stages of election campaigning Binyamin Netanyahu's Likud party were tipped for a landslide victory. All of a sudden the Israeli government decided to launch an air, naval and ground assault on Gaza, all talk that Kadima were lax on security went out of the window, and 3 weeks later the war was called off just as abruptly as it had been started, leaving all parties about three weeks of election campaigning to do. Today Kadima are running neck and neck with the opposition, even if Likud win they will not be able to hold government without Kadima's support.

In Gaza there was major discontent after a year-long Israeli-enforced siege of the territory, trade with the outside world had come to a halt, there was no fuel or electricity, and some 80% of the workforce hadn't been paid in months, people were looking to Hamas for answers and something had to give. This is why even as Israeli F-16 fighters rained bombs on Gaza, not once did Hamas concede defeat or plea for a ceasefire. This was Labor and Kadima's gift to them, with growing international anger over the conflict the siege would have to be lifted at some stage, Hamas would be lauded as heroes for withstanding the military barrage, and they would be the benefactors of millions of dollars of aid money from their wealthier Arab neighbours who would've felt guilty as they idly watched the invasion without being able to lend much support. Eventually Hamas would be much better off after the war than they were before it.

The same cannot be said for Fatah, the Palestinian group that had for the most part favoured peace negotiations over violence. What did they get for this moderate stance? Israel continuing to annex their territory to house close to 500,000 permanent settlers, not to mention the 528 fixed military checkpoints and fences that prevent children from reaching their school or workers from accessing their own farms or businesses. Proving once again that might is right in middle east politics, do you think Hezbollah is complaining because of the 2006 war in Lebanon? nope, they are by far and away the most popular and most powerful single political entity in that country. Israel said they will not negotiate with terrorists but they ended up forging a deal with Hezbollah to get their kidnapped soldiers back, suck on that Fatah n00bs. Islamic Jihad FTW.

It's not terrorism, though, it's counter-terrorism. The fact of the matter is Hamas has explicitly said that it will never stop attacking Israel, and is only willing to postpone its attacks. Israel is defending its citizens from these attacks, and the way to do that is to eliminate the threat. If Hamas militants didn't use their comrades as a defensive tactic, much fewer civilians would have died.

Secondly, Orgullo said that peace in the region will only come when God returns to Earth and something like that, and HE isn't ready to receive God, so... **** the region, no peace. If that's not retarded, I dunno what is. This is exactly why people bash religious folk. Peace will be extremely difficult if not impossible to achieve, but that doesn't detract from the sheer stupidity of that statement.

Thirdly, people feel sorry for Israel? Yeah, 10 years ago, 20 years ago, 30, 40, 50, 60 years ago, when we were the weakling the Arab world tried to crush. The world feels sorry for the underdog, and this time around, the underdog is Hamas. To say that the media hasn't painted the news in Hamas colors would be a blatant lie, and I could cite many examples to back this up.

Fourthly, Orgullo clearly has only a limited idea of what's going on both in the current situation and in the past. He has probably watched the news, seen a few innocent Palestinians in pain, and immediately decided Israel is evil, paying no attention to the story behind this war.

I am not going to bother getting into Israeli history, because that's not the issue at hand. It's important to understand the issue, but few people are even aware of what happened, and no one cares about it, people only care about poor Ahmed who died from shelling.

Orgullo is a retard. Oh, and Hamas genocide? That's fine by me. Palestinian genocide? Not so much. There's a difference between the two, which a lot of people don't seem to acknowledge.

Mandieta6, it's tongue in cheek! It's a joke! Poor Ahmed? Your tone indicates something but I wont go there. Bottom line is that Israel stole land from Palestine and is committing attrocities left and right. They are no better than the terrorists hey blame. They are terrorists, "justified" terrorists. End of story!
