Harmonics works on every fret, it's just that some are a lot harder to get than others. Harmonics works best on 12th, 7th and 5th (in that order - by the way, this is not a fact but my opinion

It's physics, mate. To do with the vibration of the string.
If you play a harmonic tone on the 12th fret the string is divided into 2 parts that vibrate with one node (non-vibrating point, ie. 12th fret). You can check this by playing a harmonic on the 12th. You'll notice that on the 12th fret the string doesn't vibrate but it does vibrate up towards the neck and near the soundhole.
Now if you play a harmonic on the 7th fret, you're dividing the string into 3 parts with 2 nodes, ie. you get a slightly lesser sound.
Playing harmonics on the 5th is same principle but now you're diving the string into four, with 3 nodes (non-vibrating points) resulting in even lesser harmonic etc.
If you play harmonic on the 8th fret then you don't have a "clean" set of nodes (ie 1 node, 2 nodes, 3 nodes) but you'll get 1.5 nodes (1.5 is just an example), and that's why you hear even less when fretting those harmonics.

. I just tried it, what you described and the string vibrated all over except right over the 12th fret. Man, I never noticed that. that gotta be the coolest ting i've seen so far this year. totally weird. Jesus christ, I can't get over it. really fascinating. (i might sound ironic, but i'm not

How are people on Pinched harmonics? It took me about 6 months to actually do one, but still after all these years its very hard to master, I can get one while playing about 80% of the time, but sometimes it requires a 2nd attempt! How do you all fare with them?

They're though indeed. Listen to Zakk Wylde, he uses them way too often, but certainly knows how to play 'em. Having said that, playing through active EMG pickups certainly helps.
