haha good evening everyone (6:45pm) so I know I haven't posted much in a while. But I'm finally taking my externship to Spain for 3 months (more if I decide to stay) after Jan, 2011. But my exact destination in that city won't be annouced to be officially till Dec, 12th 2010. So my externship instructor told me to pick a major city in Spain. At first I thought about Barcelona but the catalan language barrier I don't want it to be a issue for me but I want to learn it later on. I mean I do speak spanish I'm have Italian/Peruvian. So basically what i'm asking my brothers here in this forum who cared so much upon reading this. It must have beautiful hotels and restaurants thats my only demands. I'm going with a good amount of saved money from over the years that I will convert to euro's.

WHERE THE F*CK SHOULD I GO????

You should go to Barcelona. The catalan thing is definitely an issue, but it's not THAT bad. I mean, the city is used to having tourists, probably more than any ther city in Spain. Barcelona just has more things for you to do than anywhere else. You could also go to Madrid, since you're going at a time when the beach isn't much of a factor, although I haven't been there as much so I dunno what you could do there, I know lots of people there, though, and they're all getting by.

Frankly, if you can go to the other two than do so, because Valencia is overrated as touristy location, although it's probably 3rd best in Spain. There's stuff to see, there's a beach, a low-average nightlife and not much, honestly. But if you decide to come here I could help you a little.

Go to Barcelona.

I got pick-pocketed on the subway in Barcelona. Be careful, I've known plenty more with similar experiences.

Mandieta6 that would be amazing it would be great to get help from a friend in the old continent. my friend from school is coming with me to Spain, so I have till Sept 14 2010 to come up with a city. Something tells me I'm going to want to stay for more then the 3 months.

really? i'm surprised to hear that it would be an issue at all ... coz I get along fine with all my friends from both Barcelona and Madrid speaking only castellano, and not a jot of catalan ...

@Pizarro14: it's awesome that you're going to live and work in Spain ... I was actually contemplating taking an engineering research project in Seville this summer, but I've had to change plans because of a better opportunity here in the States -- better in terms of the research I'd be doing; coz I'd love to have had a live/study/research experience in Spain for a little while ...

A lot of place deal primarily in catalan, and it's not particularly uncommon to find people who actually don't know Spanish.

My problem was with street signs and notices and stuff like that, it's often in catalan instead of Spanish. I wouldn't call it a dealbreaker, but it's a minor inconvinience.

If I do decide to stay more then my 3 months then i'll most likely stay for 1-2 years. But you see my only concern is I don't want to feel like a outsider in Barcelona if I can't speak catalan. I really want to see Europe with my own eyes.

Honestly I would just confuse you even more, because I liked both cities when I visited them. Nevertheless, I would say Madrid is more a big, metropolitan type of city...
