Pan Pacific Championships - USA, Japan, Australia, Mexico?

AN ANNUAL tournament involving clubs from Australia, Japan and the United States will be launched in Hawaii next February, with Football Federation Australia admitting it hopes to host the event in the near future.

The Pan-Pacific championship is expected to be unveiled in the next fortnight - possibly to coincide with Sydney FC's high-profile exhibition match against Los Angeles Galaxy at Telstra Stadium on November 27.

The Pan-Pacific championship will involve two American clubs, one A-League club, and the winners of Japan's Nabisco Cup. The event is being underwritten by Major League Soccer [MLS]. The LA Galaxy are guaranteed their place on an annual basis; Gamba Osaka will represent Japan next year after winning the Nabisco Cup at the weekend.

The other two spots will go to the MLS champions [to be decided later this month] and the A-League champions, although for the inaugural event the FFA will send the losers of this season's preliminary final because the grand final [which decides the championship] has been delayed to accommodate the start of the Socceroos' World Cup campaign.

Prizemoney will be paid to three of the four teams, but all teams will have their expenses covered. The inaugural tournament will be played between February 21-23 - a timeslot that will enable A-League clubs that qualify for the Asian Champions League to still compete. Ultimately, Mexican clubs are expected to be invited to increase the marketability and profile of the competition.
Any news up north about this? I guess for you guys it's a pre-season sort of thing, as it would be for the Japanese team. For us, in future, it should be additional high-ish level competitive games to bridge the gap between the end of our season and the start of the Asian Champions League. It should be an interesting competition, though it's a shame that Costa Rica isn't involved so that we can get our revenge against those purple ******* Saprissa ****s :f***:

Bring it, biyatches :alex::alex::alex:

LA being guarenteed a spot, what bull****.

Every competition needs it's easybeats (H).

FWIW there are 80,000 tickets sold for the Sydney FC vs LA Galaxy exhibition match in a few weeks.... it's ridiculous .

I feel sorry for those people. The Galaxy don't even have a coach right now.

This tourney sounds dumb. LA guaranteed a spot? Played in Hawaii?

Where exactly in Hawaii? Aloha Stadium has been locked into it's American Football configuration and can't host soccer (the baseball configuration hosted soccer). This is because AS is falling apart, it's not impossible to say it'll fail it's next safety inspection.

That leave 4,500-seat Waipio Stadium. Which if not for it's picturesque location would be thrown in with the bleacher stadiums that dot small town America.

The soccer calendars now a days are way too saturated with these tournaments that leave us with nothing but prize money for the winners and a bunch of exausted players, that would be the case if Mexican clubs are invited. Now that Mexican clubs are able to play Libertadores, Sudamericana, and the local Apertura & Clausura tourneys plus that Super Liga that got invented simply to make the US/MEX rivalry bigger...well it be just too much for any big club to handle. Plus I think Mexican clubs would be playing their local tourney during those dates posted.

Oh, and a Mexican Club would end up winning it (H), so...*yawn*

I forgot to mention the Interliga so it's actually 6 tournaments that our clubs take part in, this Pan Pacific would make it 7.

As for the kids, we have two diamonds in the rough Enrique Esqueda & Juan Carlos Silva both were crowned U-17 champs back in '05. Still though, I doubt any club would take part in this tourney.

Why not invite some of the better Central American clubs? like the Saprissas and Marathos and Municipals of the world...yeah, not enough marketability but they would provide good competition.

That's a really good idea, Australia, Japan and the US are all semi-decent leagues and this can only improve them.

Galaxy is probably the worst team in the MLS, Gulit and a full season for Beckham won't do anything when Edson Buddle is your best striker.
