Technically, with the blu-ray drive (which would cost $1000 alone), the price isn't as bad as it first seems I suppose.

But then again, the average gamer has been priced out. £500 is too much for me, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

"Sony's PlayStation 3 was blamed just recently for bringing down Sony's profits, and now just one day after Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian said that a price cut for the console shouldn't be ruled out for this year, a senior Sony executive has gone on record saying that a price drop is an option to consider.

Although no decision on a price cut has been made just yet, according to an Associated Press report, "Pricing is among the factors Sony Corp. is studying as it expects to break even in its money-losing gaming business next fiscal year." Keep in mind that Sony actually lowered the PS3 price in Japan by about 20 percent before the console even went on sale.

"We may look at the price as part of our strategy to expand the market when the timing is right," Sony Senior Vice President Takao Yuhara told reporters at the company's Tokyo headquarters."

The official price was released today by Microsoft. The HD-DVD add on will be priced at $200. Much better than the rumored $500 but still when you look at everything in persepective, a $400 Xbox 360 with a $200 HD-DVD add on and a $100 wireless adapter, you are looking at paying over $700. The $600 PS3 that comes with all the same plus more.

Yes, but, those are all 360 ADD ONS which are optional. You're not forced to get what you don't want. A game sytem should be a GAME system, first and foremost. Everything else is bonus. I am extremely satisfied with my premium 360. Online it is the tops!

PlayStation 2 outsells PlayStation 3 in Japan
by GamePro Staff | 02/02/2007 | 7:28:42 PM PS

Sales of the almost 7-year-old PlayStation 2 beat those of the brand-new PlayStation 3 in Japan in late January for the first time, according to figures published on Friday.

By Martyn Williams

For the week of Jan. 22 to Jan. 28 sales of the PlayStation 2 totaled 20,995 units while those of the PlayStation 3 were 19,996, said Media Create Co. Ltd. The research company receives data from around 3,000 stores across Japan and uses that to estimate nationwide sales.

Sales of the PlayStation 2 have been so good that Sony this week raised its full year shipment target for that console to 13 million units from 11 million units. A combination of the low price -- it costs ¥16,000 (US$133) versus either ¥49,980 or ¥59,980 for the PlayStation 3 -- and a strong catalog of software titles is continuing to attract customers to the console.

Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s competing Wii console, which launched shortly after the PlayStation 3, sold 83,754 units in the week. The surprise winner among the new-generation consoles was Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, which managed to achieve a sales increase of just over 300 units to 7,365 units in the week when overall sales of the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 fell by just over 3,000 units to 111,115 units, according to the figures.

The biggest selling hardware of the week was Nintendo's DS Lite, which sold 194,526 units against 35,700 units for the rival PlayStation Portable.

In the software ranking "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," which launched in Japan on Jan. 25, topped the chart with estimated sales of 227,261 units. That's more than double the second ranked "Dragon Quest Monsters Joker" for the Nintendo DS.

Those japanese Ps2 numbers have been inflated for years. Everybody in Japan has a ps2 already. Most of those sold Ps2 will be shipped to Asia and sold modded on the black market.

I think it has to do with price. I would buy a PS3 next year when it has great games (hopefully) if the price is $400.

I completely agree.

Price is one factor that most gamers can't afford $600 easily. We all know gamers mostly come from teenagers-college students. They have hard time saving money to that much money.

But, hell, I still want to buy a PS3. If Sony still not reducing price later this year, I'm still on it.

Even at $600, if the PS3 had better games than the 360 and many games, period, it would motivate people to spend $600. For now, unless you plan to watch a ton of BluRay movies, for gaming alone, it's not a wise purchase whatsoever.

Looks great but I want to know,

What's good about it and whats bad about it?

Is it better then Xbox 360?

Is it coming out in March this year

My mates think Xbox 360 is better because it's better online, cheap and good graphic.

Is this true or should I ignore them?

The internal technology teams at Sony Computer Entertainment have teamed up to deliver PlayStation 3 Edge, a new set of tools for developers working on the format-holder's new console.
Due for imminent release to PS3 developers, PlayStation 3 Edge has been put together by three first-party technology teams within Sony, the WWS Europe Advanced Technology Group, WWS America ICE team (a technology group based at Naughty Dog that specialises in graphics systems and tools for the PlayStation 3), and WWS America Tools and Technology group.

Edge is described as "a set of cutting edge technologies. Rather than an overarching engine, these teams have chosen to create specialized systems that demonstrate best practices of SPU and RSX utilization" in the description of a recently announced GDC session which will formally take the wraps off the new technology.

The GDC session, hosted by Mark Cerny (Cerny Games), Jon Olick (lead programmer, Naughty Dog) and Vince Diesi (principal programmer, SCE Worldwide Studios) looks at advanced graphics tools and technologies for PS3 development an will also show delegates "a unique tool for RSX performance analysis, extensively used in the tuning of first party titles".

I'm definitely interested in the PS3 now... not in a hurry, got a couple other things I've been wanting that I'll get first. Also gonna wait for a few more PS3 titles to come out that really interest me, then we'll see..
