practice menu keeps popping up in arena mode (wirelsee 360 controller on win7)

In the demo i was able to mess about in the arena without any issues for minutes.
However, in the full game, after 4-5 seconds in the arena, the practice menu pops up automatically taking control away from the player.
Anyone else notice this?
Wondering if it's my controller.
