I started Fifa 08 on my ps3 everthing was fine, went to play online and it prompted me of required updates. (4 updates) So i let it run and when it was done it told me to exit the game (hold down the PS) so i did and went to run the game again to now get this error message.

"An error occured during the startup operation"
(80010009)

I admit i laughed at first because i've never used a game console which totally stuff up a disc game, lol... but yeah whats the deal with this? I restarted my ps3 and try to run it again only to get the same message.

AHA! not only FIFA:

Madden NFL 08 (PS3): Latest game patch causes 80009 Error

Madden NFL 08 for the PlayStation 3 - Image 1If you own a copy of Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 08 for the PlayStation 3 (also on the Xbox 360, Wii, PC, DS, PSP, PS2, Xbox, GameCube and Mac OS X), you may want to avoid going online for the moment.

Word is out at the official EA forums that Madden 08's latest update patch is causing an 80009 error after it was loaded into the PS3. Now, if you're reading this message after you ran into the reported problem, you can still remove the update by exiting Madden 08, and following these instructions (quoting EA_Violet):

1. Cycle to the Game setting in the PS3 console and highlight the Game Data Utility folder and press X on the controller.
2. Highlight the Madden NFL 08 file and press the Triangle button.
3. Choose to Delete the file and then restart the game. (Note that this only remove the update and not your saved data.)

Take note that you have to stay offline - going online will just prompt you to update again, which in turn will cause your game to malfunction (again). Violet over at the EA forums states that the company's looking into the matter, and that a fix will be released soon. We'll let you know when that happens. Until then, stay sharp.

online is fixed. well it works now. Like i said before just delete the fifa game data file in your ps3 'home' menu then fifa should run fine, if you want to go online , do so and it will check for any updates, it will not require them now since EA have adjusted it.. Actually there is a notice in the data strip in fifa saying that the EA server will be down 2am for maintenance.
